Towing A Caravan?
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:54:30 PM »

Hi All,
Thinking again about buying a small caravan and wondering what you guys pull with yours? What are the weight limits, etc?

I'd suggest a pm to Lord Robert as he hasn't been about for a while. He's the caravan man I think. He knows a lot and has the experience towing with a Forfour.

He's given up his forfour and is smartless at the moment but he had found a very 2nd hand light caravan that was within the towing limit when loaded.

Checking the manual: braked towing weight is 750kg and unbraked is 500kg.

And from the Caravan Club's website Top 20 Questions answered... http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/1022820/top-twenty-caravanning-questions.pdf

And for the towbar itself:

Westfalia... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Smart-Westfalia-Detach-Towbar-Fits-ForFour-04-Kit-/230503971606?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35ab1b7b16

OR

Brink... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Towbar-Brink-Detach-Towbar-Smart-Four-04-/250419955933?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a4e3148dd

Both require the wiring loom and both are detachable.

That's a shame I know he worked hard doing that caravan up and got it all within the limits. He's just the sort of person who'll have first hand knowledge of the handling of the Forfour whilst towing.
I must admit being sceptical of towing with such a light car as the Forfour. To me I see trailer towing in the Forfour handbook and the limits, but envisage a loaded box trailer and not a caravan. A friend of mine has travelled all across Europe with a caravan, but he always used something like a vauxhall senator to tow a small van and used an awning.

To those that might not have seen it Lord Robert's picture of his Forfour and caravan is in the Gallery under Readers Cars.
