Surrey Seaside Scramble - Sunday 12th June 2016
« on: May 03, 2016, 11:06:06 PM »

The annual Surrey Seaside Scramble is next month and is a good day out for all Smart owners.

Meeting at Newlands Corner for 10am opportunity to grab some breakfast before leaving at 11am to drive to the Sea Lane cafe (BN12 4HR) Goring-by-sea. Hopefully  good weather, grab some lunch then head on to Box Hill. I have been on the Scramble in the past when I had the Roadster and it was a good laugh, looking forward to do it in the Forfour now :)
Be good to get a few Forfours together as they very rarely go on the Scramble

Newlands Corner ?   Postcode ?
Do you mean  'Guildford Ln, Chilworth, Guildford, Surrey GU5 9BQ' ?

I've added the postcode for the Sea lane cafe to your original post....
That's if anyone wants to make their own way there, but it would be
nice if there was an approximate time that 'The Surrey Mob' descend
on the place...LOL

AND.....
from what I hear about previous 'Surrey Scrambles', some of the
roads that are used in the event after leaving the 'Cafe' on the
way to Boxhill are nothing more than glorified cart tracks...
(more commonly know as 'whites' to anyone who has ever taken
part in a rally event would know), and those are not suited to
the likes of the ForFour...especially a low Brabus !
Fine so I hear for the skinny and higher riding ForTwo's or Roadsters..
with the odd 'passing places' being very small, so they are ideally suited.

Up until I heard those comments I was fairly 'game' to join in, but now
I would appreciate a lot more information about this event PLEASE..
as to what will be encountered roadwise before I re-consider this.

Knowing some of the roads round that area they are very tight and would not easily suit a stream of cars. I may turn up just for breakfast.

I don't think the roads are that bad, it does make me smile when someone stops to let a car past and is not aware there is actually 30 ;D. It is all part of the day and adds to the enjoyment.
Your soon out on the open road flying along at 69mph on dual carriage way heading for a cracking breakfast by the sea.
Not to mention the friendly company throughout the day.

Ahhh..now we're getting the sort of info we need....
in that the narrow road stuff is on the ride from the Newlands Corner
visitor Centre to the seafront breakfast café then ?

So what are the roads like from there to Boxhill ? The same ?

If the route follows the logical maps route it will go by Sutton Abinger, Holmbury St Mary. All B roads some of which are narrow enough not to have a central white line but will just allow two cars to pass relatively slowly. Should take 75 Minutes to get to Worthing.
There is a slightly longer route that is all on A roads. About 80 miles all as a round trip assuming no 'scenic detours'!

That's a big 'IF'....
Perhaps either 9582djk, or hustler320e, or anyone else who has
participated in previous 'Scrambles' could confirm this please....

In the past (long ago) I did many 'fun' rallye's ....and none of the routes
followed the logical route that one would have expected...often with
hair raising near misses, scrapes, and sometimes the odd collision !

Please don't take this the wrong way....I think it's a great idea....
It's just that the more info that is available about the event may
convince others to join in/come along by those who are unsure
of what to expect, ok.
Forewarned is forearmed as the saying goes.

Please correct me if I am wrong here I think what CrazyG is saying is that is there any detailed route planned out for this.

When I went out with NW Smarties a few years ago on a Yorkshire run, no itinerary was given for the first part of the drive as far as I recall.

It was a good thing no 454's came on the drive because at one point, it got very narrow (one car only affair) and 452's only just fit in the gap with a big stone wall on one side and a drop of about 20ft on the other. I genuinely think a 454 would have struggled with the drive at that point.

No one mentioned the cobbled roads either, which caused one of the suspension springs on my wife's car to break.

Is the route always the same for the Scramble?

So there is an itinerary then  ::)

I'm not trying to be obtructional, just after as much info as possible
for ANYONE who may want to join in the fun.

So just what does this 'itinerary' give/show ?
And is it available as a link or a PDF that could be added to a post ?
An actual route map would be great...or road numbers (as in A123)
so that it can be Googled.

If you use Google maps to view the possible routes you can follow the best route for you, don't be surprised if you check your mirror and find you are not alone!!! In my experience you do tend to follow the car in front, I have done this and went the long way round which is all decent A roads. The time at Newlands Corner is well spent checking out the other cars and maybe a cup of coffee, there are normally other types of cars and bikes up there as it is a popular meeting place. Don't think this is a rally stage or race to the seafront as this is not the case, so danger is low on the agenda. I do not know who initially planned this run but hats off to them, it is never easy to bring it all together and encourage support but it works well. If the weather is good there is even some splashing around in the sea.
