VIN and car date.
« on: December 29, 2012, 03:02:33 PM »

I am busy with car insurance and need to get the model year correct. I know that the 10'th digit is the year of manufacture on all VIN's world wide.
My 10'th digit is "2". How can this be correct as Smart 44's were perhaps only a thought in 2002.

I did get a "Title Holder History" from the traffic dept and it shows Benz Fin Ser PTY Ltd as the 1'st owner and registered on 2005-11-17. They held it as a company car until I bought it from them.
What are your thoughts on this as one website states that the car model is the year of Manufacture and NOT when 1'st registered.

Where are you looking for the VIN? The plate should be in the drivers door jam. On my Forfour the number in the windscreen bore no relation to the VIN.

The VIN is the same on the license papers and below the passenger side windscreen wiper blade.

Try looking at the plate in the drivers door opening.

We have lots of sites that when you put the reg number into it you get the make/model/spec/engine details out.

Car insurance sites also do this

To get back on the topic. I need to get the year model and the VIN states it is a 2002. The previous post VIN shows a 2001 model. How can this be?
Getting the year model from the licence plate only shows the year of first registration. Not the model. In South Africa anyway.
Many people will put off buying a new 2012 car today and will rather wait until next week thinking it will then be a 2013 model. Not so. It will be a year old model with no mileage on the clock. The age of the car will start from 2013 not the model.

The smart Forfour was only produced from 2004 until 2006.  The 2007 registered cars weren't sold in time to be counted as a 2006 model.  So I can't understand why you talk about 2002.  It only is possible if you would have a prototype car.

On my Forfour the number in the windscreen was not my VIN. This was discovered when it went for first MOT and confused the testers as they could not access details on DVLA screen. The correct number was on the silver plate in the drivers door opening. Why this was I have no idea, but it caused no problems.

The plate with the VIN is located at the bottom of the 'B' pillar...
the centre door pillar for those not familiar with the term.
So, when you open the drivers door it is down on the bottom left
on RHD cars, on the bottom right on LHD cars.

The 10th digit is the year of manufacture and mine is a "2". That means 2002??
The VIN on my registration certificate and on the license form is the same as that which is on the windscreen.
No plate with a VIN inside the door frame. Why would they have 2 VIN's ?
