Help! My forfour has failed its MOT....
« on: November 13, 2013, 05:46:51 PM »

So my forfour has failed its MOT for the following reasons:

Brakes Frailure: RBT Brake Imbalance :6% and 47%  - Rear

Offside front lower suspension arm has excessive play in ball joint (2.4.G.2)

Fuel System Component Leaking (Fuel pipes in and around fuel filter housing)

So I called rob from s2 smart and the one he hasn't seen before on a forfour is the leaking issue, can anyone give me a ballpark figure as to the cost of all this? Car is booked in with S2 smarts for next week anyway, but would like to get an initial idea if possible! thanks!

Hmmmmmm - have you noticed any knocking from the suspension?

I've had noisy suspension on cars and it's notmally only been an advisory so yours must be bad or they are pulling a fast one!?!?

I would call and get clarification on the fuel filter and say the car is going to a smart specialist for the work and you have been informed that there is no fuel filter external to the fuel tank.

Is this a reputable garage or a halfrauds type place??

Oh dear.......... :o
As yours is a CDI, then it has the fuel filter in the engine bay up to the
left behind the battery. And it has flexible rubber type pipes, so shouldn't
be any problem for Rob....just depends on where they go off too before and
after the filter...that may be the only awkward bit.

Front suspension arm movement/worn....not something new...execept to you
that is.  Was going to go at some time or other, and it's usually when you
don't want it to, or so it seems.
Brake imbalance......sticking calipers maybe....

Cost wise...fuel pipes....shouldn't be much or take long to do.
Lower front suspension arm...think we've had that on here somewhere....
can't say for sure.  I'm assuming it needs
replacing rather than just new bushes.
Brakes......hmmmm...
I'd ask Rob for a 'ball park' figure myself.....

When I got all the service consumables for my 1.5 petrol from merc, they initially included a 'fuel filter'. when I queried this, it transpired it was a fuel tank breather, rather than something that actually prevented debris entering the fuel system. If there is any actual fuel filter, it doesn't appear to be serviceable.

And to the op, I've no experience of those issues on a forfour, but they wouldn't be big issues on any other car I've  owned, so i wouldn't worry unduely.

PLEASE.....try not to loose sight of what is/is not relevant in any topic.....
The ForFour here in question is a diesel, which I clarified in my posting,
with the hope that the topic would not be 'sidetracked' or 'highjacked' with
any references to petrol versions.
Please start an entirely new topic if what you have to say is not in context
or directly connected to the original one.   Thanks.
