Title: The Smart Festival Saturday 10th September 2011 (date confirmed)
Post by: CrazyG on March 20, 2011, 10:29:02 PM
Some people are already aware of the proposed date for this years forthcoming Smart Festival at Mercedes Benz World,
at Brooklands, Nr Weybridge in Surrey, but for those of you that didn't know...this is THE date and THE place for you to
turn up at in your ForFour.  :o

Times of the event have not as yet been formalised, but if it's ok with LadyV  I'd like her to take this post over
from this point on.   So...keep your eyes peeled for any updates and any possible 'pre-Festival' rendezvous info that can be
organised so that we can parade 'en-bloc' into the meet in as big a ForFour convoy as we can manage and steal the show
from all the other Smarts that will be there.   8)

For those that can and do....please spread the word about...(even onto FFO) as we're all part of the ForFour 'brotherhood'.

Basically you won't win because you don't have a smart, it'll be sneered at and ignored. Sorry to be harsh but thats the truth, it has to be a fortwo or roadster that is in original condition, well not modified to large extent ie no engine swaps etc... usually some tacky knitting or stickers wins the competition.

I won't be attending the smart fest, too boring and repetitive.

Hi All,

Firstly the sooner we know about which date for the Smart Festival the better- September is a pretty busy month for me work wise and the only weekend I have off is the 3rd and 4th and the 11th of September.

If the Festival is on another weekend, I might not be able to come along- I think I have pretty much used up most of my holiday time what with the wedding and the honeymoon so I am not sure if I can take a day off yet.

For the past two years I have entered my car into the "Best Kept" category- not because I think my car is the best but because I like the fact that I can represent the ForFour, however after some thought I have decided not to enter any competition (even though the parking is the best lol)- I felt after last year that it was a little bit...hmmm how can I put this...fixed?! Especially in a certain category But that's a different story altogether!

Sam- why don't you come along to meet up with all of us rather than just for the Smart Festival? I am sure it will be great to catch up with some friends?

I am happy to take over the meeting arrangements but as mentioned above I need to know the exact date before I can commit.

hey i compleatly agree with you, its the fortwo and rodie competition, but the idea i have in mind might catch a few eyes. small hint, think Ms Poo last year, something along them lines. its not a knitted smart cosy before you start jumping to conclusions!

You know what Fox  I'm in agreement with you there re Best whatever it is rubbish....
Some would say i should put mine up for it...but you know what....I can't be a*sd !

Like you I'd rather we convoyed in en-bloc....and had our own little ForFour area which we could sort of
'marshall'....where we could proudly proclaim our individuality....have a Smart ForFour flag/banner fluttering
above us while we all sit / stand around chatting to our friends.....and have a dam good day of it.

What say you all to that ?

I agree but disagree. All the "best" competitions are crap but I disagree as to why a forfour doesn't win it. Here's why it doesn't.

Fortwo owners, more often than not, are freaks. They think their cars look good if the plaster them with terrible vinyls or hideous paint jobs.
Roadster owners are (generally) wannabe sports car owners, usually midlife crisis but without the cash. They mod the hell out of the Roadster to get extra power in an attempt to claw back their age and hair line.
Forfour owners, by and large, a very normal compared to "other smart" owners because the car is more normal. They don't do the silly paint and graphics, generally they don't mod for mental power. Normal cars attract normal owners and normal owners don't do things to their car that would win a smart event. The judges at these events are expecting fluffy toys, horrible paint and mismatched vinyl, they are also expecting thousands of pounds worth of mods which just aren't available for the forfour.

As for "best kept". Fortwo and Roadster are smaller cars so less likely to scrape the paint and those car owners are more likely to change panels. I've never known a forfour owner to change their panels.

Personally, I think that not winning these competitions is actually a win in itself.
Use the system, get a decent parking spot and represent the forfour community.

I'd still suggest that forfour.co.uk had their own stand. That's parking for 4 of the best cars we have on the forum.

Post by: mr singh on March 23, 2011, 08:34:55 PM
ill put my hand up for my forfour to go on the stand, IF i get knocked back in the best dressed competition.
I'm leaning more towards the stand but i want to show my forfour and hopefully win and show the other smart owners that forfour owners are just as crazy as the rest of them!!

I think it's a good day out, to catch up with friends (and enemies!). If you are lucky enough to get entered into a competition, then you get the best parking!!

I'll be there if I'm not on vacation.

(trimmed for space)

Exactly the point I was making... covered my points in my previous post - I think we are in agreement.

Modifieds are over the top monstrosities and you'd have to be completely ridiculous with yours in making it so vulgar with crazy fibreglass, wheels, four tons of fake plastic chrome, a stupid paint job covered in vinyl and several grand's worth of ICE and a W12 engine.

There's no point in considering best-kept as year old small cars with easily swappable panels can enter.
Last year's winner (with the personalised numberplate) broke the competitions rules (upon inspection of it's tax disc it wasn't of age to enter) thus it was a small vehicle purchased recently - and if put in a garage and barely driven...

Best dressed is about being as stupid as you can with fluffy toys and stickers - and of course, some wool.

Not forgetting, the 'judges' are the visitors.... and you know who most of them are.

I wouldn't go as far as labeling people personally but I do agree on a mindset.

              --------------------------------------------------

I would agree with us having a stand but I don't agree with segregating ourselves completely - coming in convoy and parking en-bloc.
It doesn't show us as being part of the community, which I think everyone would agree is what we want.

Parking en-block does not 'segregate' us.  In fact, with so many ForTwo's I'd say they not so much segregate as flood
the whole place.....with our ForFours being the flotsum and jetsum somewhere in it all !
And coming in in a convoy shows them that we are just as much a group of committed Smart owners as the rest.

I'll do a poll as the event get's closer...to judge everyone's preference, then take if from there.  Democratic or what ?   ;D

Anyone heard any news about this year's Smart Festival? I know Baggy wrote to Smart UK via facebook and they couldn't yet give a date....

The title of this thread is 18/09- has anyone been told that this is correct?

It's getting a little frustrating as a lot of us have to check with work if we can have the day off (I am working all but the first weekend in September and if I can't take a day off then I won't be coming along)- I am going to try to push them for an answer as we were told in February last year what the date would be for the 2010 Smart Festival.....

Hi All,

Further to my post this morning, after emailing various people, I received this very quick response from Al Young (chairman of the Smart Club UK):

Hi Victoria

Thanks for your email.

As yet, Mercedes-Benz UK have not confirmed a final date for this event and
as such, we have no additional information at this time.

We expect to hear more mid-late May and we'll update you further at that
time.

Best wishes

Al

Al Young
Chairman & Managing Director
thesmartclub ltd

I guess we will just have to wait until the end of the month before we can make any arrangements....
If I hear anything back from Mercedes Benz World I shall of course keep you updated.

Thanks :)

Many thanks LadyV for all of us for the 'heads up' on the situation with the date for The Smart festival 2011.

I did originally start this post with the date of 11th Sep, but then I had quite a few peops tell me it was the 18th,
so I amended it.  Anyways...until we know for sure I'll leave it posted as the 18th.

Thanks once again.

That's ok- I (like everyone else I suspect) like to know things sooner rather than later so that we have the time to organise something.

I have heard quite a few things as well - however (and just a suggestion) wouldn't it be better if we changed the topic to read "The Smart Festival 2011" and change it accordingly when we have a confirmed date?

As said before I shall keep everyone updated!

Thank you! :)

EVERYONE............
So that our ForFours do not get lost in the 'sea' of ForTwo's and Roadsters as they do every year, the idea this year is that we will
have a rendezvous point in the car park at Tesco's at Brooklands where we will all meet and then 'tube' in en masse to the Festival.
That on it's own will be a 'first' for us ForFour peops......and it will ensure we get ourselves in our own group.

I even have a 3m long genuine Smart ForFour banner to fly above us when we've parked up !    8)

Exact details of where Tesco's is and how to get to it from various directions/routes will be posted by me nearer to the date.
When details are know of the start time (usually 10am) we'll confirm a meet time. Meanwhile, how about 9:30am meet and 10:30am
start of convoy ?

However can I make one request & suggestion ........

I know it may be really hard for some members but to put on a real "show " .. can we please get there early early early ..!!
I remember last year the queue to get in & was a bloody nightmare !  I remember the queue building up after I got there early last year & was sooo glad i timed it right xox
If it says a start time you need to be there an HOUR  or 30 mins before like last year to avoid the queue and make it easier for us
I'm staying nr windsor again so I can meet at Tesco's .. I think I know the one you mean from the one i found the 1st time we went & did it in a day  but how i found it 2 yr ago I have no idea LOL

CANT WAIT !!!!!!

Hi,

Just to update everyone- I have managed to establish that I had more days holiday from work that originally anticipated so I have booked the 10th off (it helps that it's at the end of my shift so I get 5 days off rather than 4!).

Both Fox and I have registered but will give the competitions a miss this year- as mentioned previously.

With regards to meeting up- we may choose to start from Croydon as usual as they do have some competitions beforehand- plus they have a little registration pack, and it's nice to meet up with a few local Smart drivers. This does of course depend on the timing as last year they were particularly slow so we ended up leaving before the convoy to the festival as we were in the competitions.

Last year a lot of us met up after the festival at the following pub: http://www.handandspear.co.uk/ it's really close to Brooklands and easy to get to with free parking.

If anyone else is up for this idea after the festival, please let me know. Alternatively if you would like me to look into a different pub, please also let me know.
I will need to reserve us at the pub so the sooner I have numbers the better. Also as per last year, it's easier for the chef at the pub to know what we want to eat beforehand so they can prepare our meals in advance.

I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on the above :)

LadyV - We had a great time at the pub last year so Chris and I would be up for a meet afterwards.

OK everyone,
Here is the map of where/how to get to the Smart Festival.
From the M25 exit at Junction 10 a this is the easiest and the best entry point to get to MBWorld
....and...to the proposed rendezvous point of the Tesco car park.
(The route from Junction 11 can be a nightmare and is not that pleasant)

Tesco's can be got to by the entrance in Oyster Lane..the road splits/forks to a right hand
lane peel off, just before the entrance to M&S and Tescos, so be careful when you get there.

As has been expressed elsewhere, the meet up time atTesco's and the start of the convoy/tube is crucial.
MB opens at 10am....and there is usually a queue to get in even then !
A later start than 10am into MB will encounter a rapidly growing queue of Smarts.
So....my suggestion is..... a 09:00 - 09:15am 'start to meet up' in Tesco's car park...
(which gives peops a chance to grab any bits n pieces they want from Tesco's/M&S),
and the start of the ForFour convoy/tube into MB to be at 09:40 -> 09:45am.

Please don't post any thoughts/ideas/questions on here about this.....PM me instead. Thx

G

The postcode for the M&S is "KT13 0XF" for all those SAT NAV folk out there.

May I make a suggestion rather than waiting then suggesting on the day.

A colour coded convoy, going by panels primarily but then by tridion afterwards. Just think it would look better. If more than two are identical then go by engine size and or type.

I think it would look great.

Would say Black, silver, red, blue, white then green?
Some people usually double take because they see a very similar car. This would just be funny.

OR if there are enough of us going (probably won't be) we could do one of each colour then the exact same combination repeating.

Just a thought, just thinking about maximum impact.

One last idea that won't work because its too stupid, would be very funny though.

http://apps.facebook.com/three_d_smart_car/?ref=bookmarks

You can print out and fold together a mini forfour. Making a teeny origami 44.

The idea being if you print them out two to a page you get a nice mini model. Then hide them around the show cars and in any others that you find open.

Hello,

Just reading some ideas on here about the meet- both myself and Fox have two different coloured ForFours and we would like to travel together so we won't be travelling in colour code as per the suggestion by Shagpile.

As far as meeting at about 09:00- this is quite an early start, especially for those coming from up north, or in fact anywhere two hours or more from Brooklands...

Fox and I were talking about going to Smart of Croydon where we met up last time as they give you free breakfast, a goodie bag and you're entered into the competitions to win some lovely prizes (last year we won the use of a ForTwo Brabus for the weekend).
We don't plan to stay too long there as last time they took their time on getting us going (we left early as we were in the competitions) but I think it would be nice for us to meet up with some of our local Smart drivers before heading up to Brooklands.

I am of course very happy to join the convoy at Tescos but I feel that I don't want to miss out on seeing some of our friends (Brulaw as an example) and saying hello to the guys that run the Smart of Croydon area.

Further to my post- does everyone agree with the suggestion to meet up after the festival to have some dinner in a local pub? I'll need some ideas of numbers and locations (one suggestion was the pub that we went to last year). If you could let me know as soon as possible, I can start requesting a booking.

PM me or reply on here :)

That's what we did at our first smartfest (2009) Got there about 8:45 am. Love to get there early, would be strange to actually arrive at 10 if we joined the forfour tube which we will proberly do!

What we did last year was stay at a hotel the night before then drive down at 9, then went to the pub with a few of the forfour gang (the highlight of the day with lots of giggles) then went back to the hotel. This is something I really recommend to anyone who has to travel 4+ hours to get to london/smartfest  :)

I'm lucky I can stay at hubbys cousins again like we did last year ..
year before we did it ina day & was cream crackered  when we got home at night.. we set off at 6.30am-  had brekkie at watford gap then spent the full day at Brooklands before getting  back home in sunny North Yorkshure  about 9pm

one day is do-able but like Mr Singh i like to be there nice and early

Plus the quicker we get there the closer to the front we park & everyone after has to walk past our lovely Forfours !!

Dinner sounds great too!

Do we need to pre-book, or can we just turn up at M-B Brooklands on the day?
We could have three: a Roadster, my Forfour and my son-in-law's Fortwo....

Thanks for that: I'm not too bothered about the Registration Pack. I'll sort out what the others are doing first, but have marked the calander and will watch for info on the Tesco-car park meeting point!  We'll take a rain-check on the dinner afterwards, thanks, as we've got another daughter living near Guildford where we can cadge dinner and/or a cup of tea! If not Registered, do we have to park hap-hazzard on arrival?

You can see the car park for smart cars on the right hand side. You can see the queue of people to get in!
If you're in a smart, you park in the 'smart parking' area.

Nero   ;D
In earlier posts you will have seen that I'm organising a meet and 'convoy' of ForFours
from Tesco's car park at Brooklands...spitting distance from MB-World.  This is because
the organisers will not allocate seperate areas for different Smarts.
Being as the ForFour is in the minority we get spread here there and everywhere, it is
hoped that this way we'll at least have a group of our own.

For those that can't manage to make our rendezvous, it will be a case of park where
you're told...and where there's space.
Last year was pretty dam full, with cars having to park off the tarmac and on the grass.
Smart car attendance figures for previous years are...
just under 1000 (2008), just over 1100 (2009), 1440 cars (2010).

Hi G,

I think we are going to pop into Croydon first of all, like we did last time for the first half an hour and then make our own way to the festival. If we happen to see everyone at Tesco when we arrive then we shall join you. If not we shall just drive straight to Mercedes Benz World.

For anyone going to Croydon first of all, please let me know and I will let you know the time you should be there. I am going to drop them an email now as each year it has differed regarding the time we should meet there!

CONVOY MEET POINT - SLIGHT CHANGE.

For those intending to meet up before the start of the festival and 'convoy' in, I have
been advised that tesco's car park on Saturday morning is a bit of a 'mare', so with that
in mind I have a very very slight amendment to make.
Please look at the map at the bottom of post/page 4, and you will see that after you
turn off the A245 (Parvis Road/Byfleet Road) into Sopwith drive that you come to a
roundabout and it shows a left turn towards Tesco's/M&S.
DO NOT TURN LEFT at that roundabout.
Instead turn right...and this will take you into a secluded car park where there are
some swings n stuff (behind barriers/fence) for children. Drive in slowly and you'll then
see my car and whoever else is already there...waiting.

NB: If you do need to go to Tesco's or M&S for anything, go there first and then come
out and bear left to the roundabout, go across it and into 'the meeting place'.  OK ?

Why not try to book a hotel locally? It's a shame that you're not travelling from Heathrow as that's much nearer to MB world (and easier to get to).

Fox and I are staying with my Dad who lives nearby in South London. We have stayed at the Brooklands Hotel which was amazing but very expensive. We were thinking of stating at the Hilton in Cobham this time (I get free hotel stays at Hiltons) but it's now full :-( I suspect a lot if them will be quite busy on the day as it's a Saturday and a major event but google "Weybridge hotels" and I'm sure you'll find something.

Just a thought....
Premier Inn are doing a lot of advertising on the TV for "rooms from £29"...
so maybe they're worth a look to see if they have any places around or within close
driving distance. A short drive can save an bomb compared to a closer expensive hotel.

My Dad has a double room or a single room. (we are starting from Croydon- we will pop in and say "hi" to some local Smart owners that we know before heading off a little earlier as usual). The drive from my Dad's to MB World is about 15 miles.

Please let me know if you would like a room on the Friday night. Please bare in mind that I won't be back from work on Friday til about 21:00 but Fox will be in.

It's an idea for those who are driving long distances already....PM me if you're interested.

It didn't say which model it was for but I'm assuming that it was for my Brabus as I registered for that a week ago today...

First impression of the packs are: they aren't as full as the previous years, only containing a letter, a big bumper sticker and the window sticker. Last years had an activity map and event plan included I think... So maybe they are saving paper dunno lol.
Hope everyone gets there's soon! ;)

is it a set of wide rear and narrow front? just trying to get my head round it.
and you have several options on getting there.
1) walk... could take a while but you will become fit
2) get a bus/coach/train/taxi

Now we have 4 packs...another 2 arrived today! Typical! Unfortunately we can't go now as I have to fly to the Czech Republic on Wednesday to see my grandad and can't fly back until Sunday! :( Magabicool is around but he doesn't want to go without me maybe you guys can persuade him to still come along!

Tut Tut! I guess you either love cars or hate them! I think sometimes I would rather stick knitting needles in my eyes than do some of the more "girlies things"! lol

Had a look on the smart fest site at the list of exhibitors and good mentions for smartmods and s2smarts but no mention for bigperformance - seems odd. I was gonna have a look over his stuff just to see what it's like. Oh well :(

You usually get £5.00 worth of food vouchers (included in your Smart Bag when you arrive)- I'd take extra cash if you plan on eating there as food at outdoor events can get expensive.

We've bought a couple of bits but nothing too major- depends if you're looking to buy parts etc!

I have found that there isn't too much related to the ForFour (obviously) but if you find something you want, grab it as it will be gone when you change your mind!

Just to let everyone know that I have printed some "Spotted Flyers" (managed to get 6 per page) and will be placing them on as many ForFours as I can when we decide to look in the car park at all of the Smarts - Promotion anyone?! LOL :)

Not much parts to buy for the forfour at the smart fest lol,
I've only seen a grill or two at previous years...  :(

You gotta think outside of the box guys..... Like will fortwo mudguards fit the forfour.... Can I adapt that roadie dash pod to fit on my a-pillar to hold a boost gauge ;)

Is there a cash machine on site??

Do some sellers take cards/cheques/IOUs/paypal ;)

I saw and well done for correcting that dude! I thought that was a tad rude to comment on someone's post and ask that person if they had an opinion as to whether their car was "a real Smart"- what did they think I was going to say?! Hahahah!! :)

I should be there this weekend, with my girlfriend, but not sure to make it at the rendez-vous on time as we have more than 2.5hrs of driving ... So if I'm not at the meeting point in the morning, I will hopefully see some of you during the day !

If the 'convoy' into MBWorld is successful....
there will be a large group of us parked together with 2 or possibly 3 genuine Smart
'FORFOUR' banners (2 hang 3m x 1m, and 1 is 3m wide x1m high) flapping around us !

(that's assuming MB don't raise any objections....)
 8)      8)      8)      8)      8)      8)       8)       8)       8)       8)       8)       8)

All owners of a Smart ForFour 'united' under the same banner.
