My 1.5 95hp manual diesel is just coming up to 150k miles and is still going strong. Only significant issues have been with wear-and-tear replacements of running-gear components (no surprise there), and had the dreaded rear bushes done last year. Air-con packed up a few years ago and was just too expensive to fix so has been left u/s, but otherwise all is well and it's still in use for my daily commute and clocking up over 15k miles per year.
Anyone else out there with big(ish) mileages on their cars, and has anyone seen any problems starting to crop up at high mileage? I'm going to keep running it until it goes "pop", I just wish I has a crystal ball and knew when that "too expensive to be worth repairing" fault was going to happen!

It could be a very long time before your beloved CDI 'bites the dust'...
as MB tested the CDI engine for over 1 million miles !
With regular servicing and the use of good oils etc there is no reason
for you to give the life expectancy of your CDI a second thought.
Other parts may wear out many times, but that engine will keep on going.
-
~241.000kms so right around 150 thousand miles myself with my '04 1.3 manual.
One rear bearing packed and the tailgate and drivers door actuators died, and all 4 springs and rear shocks changed.
Other than that just regular servicing, oil, filters, discs&pads, spark plugs and aux belts were changed, and lots of body panels over the years.
Engine and gearbox are still strong and will more than likely last another 150K but other parts are showing their age. A/C command pannel sometimes snags, heat setting has a mind of it's own in days when it's cold but not freezing, windscreen wipers start working only after a couple of minutes after the engine was started, headlights are dim, door seals are perishing...
If something major fails i hope i can find a donor car and repair mine.
-
G'day mutley,
At just over 100k KM mine is just run in i think.....lol.
Greetings,
Eddie.
-
my 1.1 had 133,000 miles when i sold it 18 months ago...
-
One of the cdi's we look after just flew through mot again at nearly 190,000 miles :D
-
175.000 km now. Love it more than ever :)
That 3 cyl CDI is a beast.
BUT MAN I MISS THE 6th GEAR!!!!!!! Drive from Amsterdam today made me think of it.
My dad was with me, he drives A class w169 with basically the same engine and 6th gear added.
Driving 130 kmh at 2.500 rpm is tedious sometimes in my 44
-
if its the 'same engine' in the W169 then have a look to see if the 6 speed box will mate up to the forfour...
-
Just seen a 2005 silver 1.5 CDi manual for sale on ebay with 201,532 miles !
(ok, so it needs a new EGR valve, but it's fixable and still drives)

i don't like how the drivers seat belt is buckled and the 'across chest' section is over the head rest... shows that the driver doesn't care for there safety much.
is a 12 year old diesel with 201,000 miles on the clock... its low for a diesel, id expect it to have at least close to 240,000 miles given the age
-
Car got through its MOT today with over 161k on the clock, 25k in the last 12 months. Looks like it will be with me for another year at least!
-
8)
nice
JJ
-
That's good going. On the mot and 25k in the last year. What's your range like to a full tank roughly?
-
Range is a little over 500 miles before the warning starts to flash - so somewhere in the mid-late 50s mpg. That's on a steady 45-mile each way commute, all A-road / dual carriageway at 70mph on the GPS (about 76mph indicated).
-
My remapped 1.5 CDI AMT gave just over 600 miles when
I 'rode shotgun' behind the S2smarts race truck and trailer
down and back to the middle of France on 2 occasions...
all at 55-60 mph. Was a bit boring mind....
-
G'day all,
The most ive had out of a tank was 886km and filled up with 44 liter petrol, but that was on a long distance trip, so that was not bad for a 1.5 liter forfour.
Greetings,
Eddie.
-
MOT / Service today at 181k miles - so 19.5k miles in the last 11 months.
Front wheel bearing replaced (it had got VERY noisy) and a couple of advisories but otherwise all good to go for another year. All being well should break 200k in the next 12 months.
The highest mileage I ever got from a car was 186k from an Accord diesel tourer - but that had been on its knees for about a year before it finally went.
-
im assuming that its a diesel you have mutley?
taking in to account how old it is (assuming its 14 years old) its low mileage for a diesel.
my rule of thumb is that diesels on average should cover 20,000 miles a year, times that by 14, it should have covered 280,000 miles in that time.
-
Errrm...mr singh, his profile 'signature' does say he has a 1.5 CDI Passion ::)
-
a combination of being tired and a duff laptop screen, lead me to not seeing the signature.
-
112k miles when sold mine.
Through 25k miles I have replaced lambda sensor, intercooler and turbo pipes.
Not much, as engine was going strong. Good engine. With premium oils and premium fuel I believe it should hit 400-500k miles of lifespan without complete rebuild.
EGR and valves of 1.5 CDI hates cheap fuel.
My best was 4L/100km or 70 mpg. Constant 2000 revs /60mph over 1000 miles. On premium fuel.
It should be better with cold intake starting around intercooler and KN filter. I never measured with this setup.
-
Mine just 112500km, so just run in.....lol
-
my SB3 ticked over to 105300 miles last week.
if i had kept my 1.1 it would have been at 155,300 miles
-
Hmm, I understood that it his post was about the mileage tha a forfour has achieved in it’s lifetime... not the mpg? 🤔
-
My brabus hit 100,000 this morning on the way home from work, put just over 25,000 on it in the 14 months I've had it. I perhaps should have bought a cdi.
-
Sold my Mazda Premacy diesel at 268000 with burst radiator and head gasket gone;and my Renault Espace petrol still running well at 450,000, so that puts these ForFour mileages in perspective.Oh, and my Focus diesel recently at still running at well over 200,000 miles.
-
Hmm, think that this is going a bit of topic? Longevity of forfours... highest mileage? :D
-
Hello there from Italy,
My 1.5 cdi amt is clocking know 231,000 km and still going strong as a daily driver for commuting (total 50 km daily) and occasional long trips.
From 2005 I've replaced two wheel bearings, one drivers door cable, one front semi-axle (2015) and the alternator (2018).
Front arms, links and shock absorbers (sachs) replaced around 2014, sourced very cheap on ebay and amazon.
Both central air vents broke one year ago, replaced with used ones.
Sadly, polycarbonate front sun roof is not in a good condition.

Ha ha, my barely run in 1.1 Passion has just passed 96,000 miles and runs as tight as a drum. ;)

your 231,000 KM is a minor 143,500 miles, compared to mutley's 181,000 miles (291,300 KM)
-
220 000 km soon (138 000 miles), so far all wheel bearings have had to be changed, new shocks, new ARB bushes, central locking radio, left rear brake caliber, and a ton of H7 bulbs.
Next repairs are rear ABS sensor and new clutch, and general inspection of whole car with endoscope for broken wires, hoses, starting leaks etc...
-
G'day, mine at 113000km just run in.....lol.
-
~241.000kms so right around 150 thousand miles myself with my '04 1.3 manual.
Barely passed the 250K km mark 1.5 years later. From doing 45.000kms in the first year to 10.000kms in the last 1.5 years...

Mine is around the 96,000 km mark. Just changed a bearing and otherwise.... Smooth as silk.
-
Mine is not really moving from about 196,000 miles. It has been relegated to 3rd car status and only gets occasional use. I’m still looking forward to it hitting 200k miles :-)
-
ill buy it if and when you sell it. iv got a thing for 'high' mileage cars... there was an audi a6 on ebay a few months back with 600,000 miles and it was 10 years old. id have snapped it up if it were a little south of the £10,000 they wanted (drop a few 00's and id have had it)
looking back to my 1.1 it would have been at 170,000 miles... oh how i miss my 1.1 :'(
-
Thanks Mr Singh, will bear that in mind! I would really like to see it go past 200k in my ownership. If it lasts long enough it will probably go to live with my daughter in a year or two when she gets to the point of needing a car.
-
MOT passed today with only two advisories - one for "offside play in steering rack inner joints" and another for a leaking oil filler cap. Replacement filler cap ordered from Amazon for £2.30. Once that is here the engine will need a clean to get all the oil off. My guess is that it didn't seal properly after it was removed for the service a couple of months ago.
It has only done 3,000 miles in the last 18 months so it may be a while before it hits 200k!
-
Finally made it today - my ForFour (well, my daughter’s now) hit 200k miles!
I would post a pic if I knew how :-)

congratulations on hitting 200,000 miles. had i not bought mt XF, i recon my SB3 would be over 150k by now.

270tkm passed and ~4k€ worth of maintenance repairs done to it... in a year :-\
Basically only the engine, transmission, exhaust, interior panels / cloth and wire harness are still pretty much original. Pretty much all spinning mechanical parts replaced and still not everything is fixed... (wipers need attention at next summer... the front wiper is wobbly and rear one is starting to be sticky)
Well part of the reason is I chose a bad garage to do fixes and they clearly didn't know what they were doing...
-
As you state that the rear wiper is 'starting to be sticky', why not fix that yourself
instead of waiting until you have to buy a new rear wiper moptor assembly ?
There is a detailed Technical Guide on this Forum that takes you through all the
steps you need to do to fix it before it is too late, and it costs little but your
time, a few tools, and some copper grease.
Oh and your garage does know what they are doing....they are 'milking' you
of your hard earned cash and putting it into their pockets. Change garage.
-
Pleased to say that "my" 200k mile ForFour has needed very little in the way of maintenance other than consumables. The dreaded rear bushes were done maybe 6 or 7 years ago and the aircon hasn't worked for years (I really wish now that I had paid to get that fixed, but who knew the thing would still be in the family and running now??).
My daughter has got it booked in for a service next week and then an MOT in the New Year (not how I would have done it, but it's her task to sort it out) so I've got my fingers crossed that here won't be any big surprises.
