if it was immobiliser related it wouldn't engage the starter, so you can rule that out

really?? i may go and try in a bit before i wake the neighbours up with the alarm :)

i only ask because the blade on the fob is broken but dad has a separate blade (no fob) for the ignition. he did something and the fob fell apart so he put it back together.

on my pug, i can open the doors manually and try and turn over the car and it will just keep turning over until i press the unlock button.

interesting....

car locked
open passenger door with key (all doors unlock)
open drivers door (alarm goes off)
put key in ignition and alarm stops and deactivates and car starts (no pressing of fob)

now that says to me that the ignition is only fully active when the key is in the barrell

i will get my dad to try the same and see if he does the same he gets the same results.

very strange - seems as though his alarm isn't working.

alarm doesn't go off when entering after just using door lock

alarm doesn't beep at him after locking with boot and/or bonnet open

grrrrrrrrr!!

still won't start though!!

don't think its the fob though!

Hang on... so he's been trying to start it with a key blade, but no fob attached?  The car is looking for the fob (and coded internals) to be next to the ignition - i.e. part of the key - when it starts...

Yep, looks like your imobiliser is kicking in because you are trying to start the car without the chip in the key.

does it still work like that??? - is it not like a fortwo??

if so then it may be that on the odd occasion that it did start that the fob was close enough but not other times.....

i just asked him and yes - he separated the fob from the blade (they were taped together) and just hung the fob on the key ring!! he's sticking them back together as they were!!

hold tight...............here we go!!

Poor car battery, cranking for so long...you should really charge it up overnight now to avoid any problems in the winter.

AHAHAHA look at me solving the riddle ;)

I keep trying, and finally I did it :P

Glad it's solved.  The broken key my car came with was the same - the fob was taped together.  Buy some hard plastics glue and stick the pieces back together, then once dry lay a good dose of it either side of the crack.  It won't hold through all rough handling, but it will survive the usual turning motion the key goes through.

i will get my sis to order a new key when she is in work.

i've got her to get me rear seatbelt, front grill and a tow cover - was cheaper than getting off ebay

There was a very clever scam a few years ago, with Fords mainly, a dodgy garage would sell you a car with the immobiliser chip glued in on the inside on the steering column overriding the immobiliser - wait a week and then they'll steal the car back using any old key from the manufacturer. Cheaper than cloning the key and then sell the car on again and again under different plates. lol

Glad you have it fixed, parents do the weirdest things and never fully explain what they've done - just like kids!

It's all sorted now...(if you read a few few posts higher up) so...
I'll lock this topic down, unless JJ has anything more worth adding to it.
