100.000 miles late Xmas present

Although in the last year or so i have had the car off the road (written off), drove the SX4 gas leech, or rode the bicycle around town, i have finally hit 160.000 KM in my beloved forfour. So what better way to celebrate than a 1000km round trip to buy the wheels I've been dreaming of since I've bought my forfour 3 1/2 years ago and more than 85K kms? ;D



At last, a set of Grandlines in my country.  Hope they won't buckle with the first pothole i hit :( Now to find some tires, i have a pair of 215/45R17s but i think 205/45R17 would be better suited (i know 205/40R17 is standard) We'll see.

Air is drawn into the cylinder of a diesel engine and compressed by the rising piston at a much higher compression ratio than for a spark-ignition engine, up to 25:1. The air temperature reaches 700-900 C, or 1300-1650 F.

Just one really, others were not the car's fault, but mine.

Downstream O2 sensor's heating has failed.

AC compressor failed after a crash that dented the ac radiator, and i kept on using it. Pressure was very high and the A/C would not switch off, all pipes froze including the condenser inside the car, the fan could not blow air through it anymore.

Driver and front passenger door cables snapped (one after a gipsy kid was doing chin ups hanging from it and one in the winter at a car wash when stupid employee yanked on it).

Heater controls would jam when trying to select feet position.

And of course the throttle valve has to be cleaned once every ~40k.

No mechanical issues after driving on very bad roads, or very high speed, or with very big loads. I could not be more pleased with my smart, that is why after every accident i keep repairing it instead of buying another one. It is my best friend, has taken me everywhere and always brought me back in one piece. I swear this car takes care of me 10 times more than i do of it.

Ahhhh Grandlines.   Well done to you for getting them.
They were my dream too, seldom seen, rare....and a fortune if ever a set did 'surface' anywhere.
Then I saw my first Monoblock A's.....and they became my 'first love'. (Expensive yet again.)
My current Fox FX1's are about twice as strong as the Monblocks....but they're not genuine Smart.
Oh well....

Anyway...tyres....
205/45/17's will make your speed 72.36mph when your speedo shows 70mph..a 3.37% difference.
215/45/17's will make your speed 73.55mph when your speedo shows 70mph..a 5.07% difference.

Most speedo's over-read, viz show 70mph when you're doing 67mph, but with these your speedo
will under-read.  The maximum difference factor ideally shouldn't exceed 2.5%.
(That then allows for the speedo error.)

id like a set of grand lines but after my last set of wheels on my fortwo, ill pass, i would like a set of movelines though (the 16" four spoke wheels).
my forfour has done over 100,000 KM, just about 25,000 miles off 100,000 MILES

Is it possible to change the wheel size in the software?

Surely dealers wouldn't fit a set of option 17s on one that used to have 15s without rectifying/corecting the speedo??

The overall diameter of the wheel stays the same, wheel differences are more than catered for by the speedo over-reading. So if you switch from 175/65R14s to 205/40R17 the difference in speed will be of 2.18% (that's 2kph more at 100kph) but because the speedo overreads by as much as 5 kph, you are ok.

Of all forfour tire sizez, 195/50R15 has the smallest overall diameter, so with this tire the speedo will overread with the biggest margin. If you switch to 16 or 17 inch tires, the speedo will become more and more accurate.

You can of course recalibrate your speedo, I'm sure when fitting the brabus instrument panel our colleague with the killer whale 1.1 had to.  I have 1 inch bigger tires on my winter set (175/65R15 instead of R14) and that's a difference of 4.3%. So i know for sure that if the speedo says 100, i'm doing that speed :) And I'll surely get a ticket if the cops get me ::)

They were a lot, granted, but you can't put a price on happiness :D I love my forfour and these rims will really complete it :D

The tires were as new but, like the rims, they were made in 2004, so 8 years old now. I offered him a lot less, but we finally settled for 600 euros, for which i also got from him a pair of uniroyal 215/45R17, which are a bit tall, but we'll see what i can squeeze in on the front and how the car rides on such tall tires.

So i still payed a lot of money, but since I've always wanted a set, and they very rarely come up, and i had traveled 500kms just to get to them, i wasn't going to go home without them ???
