Title: 1.3, ABS + Yellow Triangle Light permanently on
Post by: gimba on February 07, 2018, 01:20:06 PM
Howdy
Both these came on today whilst just driving normal, probably 30mph, and they stay on, even when restarting the car, they just come on and stay on straight away

What are the basic symptoms to check with this?

I checked my brake lights work, and they do, along with sidelight bulbs dimming
Brake fluid is at MAX mark

What else should be checked? I'll have a look at these Ring things behind the wheel over the weekend for any cracks

Where are the ABS sensors?

thaaaaaanks

Check the fuses on the battery positive terminal, one of them is for the ABS.

As in the rear lights on when not pressing brake, when the light switch is on .. i.e correct way around

@ Alex cheers for that, i'll have a look a little later at that one

If the lights come in as you start moving then wheel sensors

If come on when brake then pedal switch

If come on straight away then abs module/supply

ABS/EBD module is on the bulkhead, behind the battery. It's the one with the bent metal pipes.

Here's a pic from evilution which shows it quite well (https://www.evilution.co.uk/files/smartengine/earth/454/earth6.jpg).

When the fusible link breaks, ABS module is seen as dead by the car.

ABS sensors are on the wheel bearings.

have the codes read... no point in guessing what MIGHT be the cause without knowing which area could be at fault. it could be as simple as a sensor, or a switch. worse case scenario, wiring or ABS unit

That would require going to a smart specialist. Also, driving it like this is not advised (manual says pull over, secure car and call breakdown services for a tow to smart workshop).

Eliminating the obvious will save time and money when it comes to actually fixing the car.

I've booked myself into a smart specialist, earliest they got is Wednesday 21st
Gives me time to certainly check all the basics before spending £60 on the test

as for not driving, as it's "only" ABS and EPS  I should be alright I think, just be abit more cautious, I feel the handbook would tell you to call for recovery just to cover their own back if something terrible did happen, out of control skid etc

Hi gimba,

Check out:
http://mmc-manuals.ru/manuals/colt/maintenance/Colt_2004_Workshop_Manual/35C_Traction_Control,_Active_Stability_Control_System.pdf (http://mmc-manuals.ru/manuals/colt/maintenance/Colt_2004_Workshop_Manual/35C_Traction_Control,_Active_Stability_Control_System.pdf)

It's for the ForFour's close cousin, the Mitsubishi Colt (2004) - you may have noticed many of the parts between the cars (including ESP/ABS sensor parts) are 100% identical.

The Yaw sensor is just behind the gear stick under the centre console. The Steering sensor is behind the steering wheel. I replaced both of these but in my case I only had the ESP light.

For the ABS and ESP lights together, I reckon your likely culprit is something shared between these systems, i.e. the ECU, or much more likely, one of the the sensors around the wheels, eg. ABS sensor, reluctor ring or failing/loose cable, is throwing bad signals around. Also it could be the ABS actuator (which allows ABS/ESP to pulse your brakes to correct a skid) etc. etc. etc.

The best way to be sure (unless you find your smoking gun so to speak) will be reading the ODB2 port directly and see what errors were logged.

As mr. singh rightly says....
have the codes read... no point in guessing what MIGHT be the cause without knowing which area could be at fault. it could be as simple as a sensor, or a switch. worse case scenario, wiring or ABS unit

Checking anything else out without the necessary equipment is time
wasting unless you know exactly what your looking at or for. HOWEVER,
having said that, the one thing that is simple to check is the fusible
link that is at the battery. It is the big block under the red cover and
as already stated, one of the 4 fuses in it is associated with the ABS.
Grab a circuit tester and check for continuity across each fuse.

Other than that, wait till your appointment with the Smart 'indie'.

I had issue with just yellow triangle light on. After short investigation - stuck EGR.
When it comes on rarely you can get away with very good PEA cleaner in fuel and steam cleaning cylinders by air inlet, what I've done and problem is gone. But sometimes ti will require taking EGR off (which is behind engine, when you look on the front of car) and cleaning with naphtha.

I think you are getting confused Deszus....
The yellow triangle only comes on where there is a problem
with the ABS (brakes or traction).
Any EGR or engine management issue triggers the EML light
which is a totally different light to the ABS one.

A bit late to ask  ;D, but did you find a solution? Mine just appeared after driving on a bumpy patch of road. I had to drive 200 km with both lights on until I got home ( car was like usual). Then, today I checked under the car and cleaned everything with a water pressure gun. Before that, the car was parked for three weeks, and due to winter, there was plenty of salt.

From below, everything seemed right; however, the OBD-II showed an error code C1200, indicating a short circuit in the EPS/ABS - front right. I will check the fuses tomorrow just in case.

My Forfour 454 is amazing, with more than 200 000km, and despite its age, I want to keep it until the last day. :-*

Did who find a solution ?  If by that you mean the person who started
the original thread ('gimba'), then he did post the solution to his
issue of both lights coming on at the bottom of the 1st page.....

replace the RF ABS sensor.

Thank you for your responses!! This weekend, I erased error codes and did a deep cleaning behind the wheels with warm water. Surprisingly, both lights (ABS and yellow triangle) didn't turn on. I then drove more than 200 km with the car and still no sign of those ;D Salt is a bad conductor and also a corrosive agent; I believe it might have affected ABS sensor measurements. ::)

By the way, my  RF ABS sensors are almost new, 7 months ago I changed all bearing wheels and ABS sensors.

Regarding the C1200 error code I had, it seems that is related to "Wheel speed sensor (FR) system (open or short to earth or power supply)"
