Hi there. It's a sub woofer. Gives you more base.  ;)

For the 'average' owner the factory fit sub isn't that bad.
I've retained mine even though I have changed the door speakers.

Yes it does lack real 'oomph' for those who like thumping base,
but then most of those type/sort of people own Escorts/Fiesta's/
Pug's/Clio's and the like.....and 10 trillion watt amplifiers...LOL.
However, it does have it's limitations, and a bit more  of that
baseline would not go amiss to be honest.
Think of it more as a 'backing' subwoofer.....it does it's job well,
without being over obtrusive.

Shortly i'll be trying out one of Evil's suggestions for a cheap and
simple fit self contained powered sub.  A 100watt powred sub that fits
into the middle of the spare wheel....from out of a Mazda6 !
even if it sticks up/out it's small enough to fit in the boot on it's own.

Think it must be me! Loads of folks on here rate the standard fit smart/MB system as not very good. However, I think it's excellent. I guess as in all things in life it depends on what your expectations are. Being an old fogey, on the radio I listen to Radio 2/4 mainly, however from my iPod a variety of music... and the system always delivers for me. So I just think of the money I'm saving by not needing/wanting to upgrade change anything... plus I like the standard look. I always think that some cars look like the owner has driven it through Halfords and couldn't make their mind up what to have so just got a bit of everything! Lol!

You don't necessarily need to change the look, I've changed my front door speakers and added rear door speakers but kept the original grilles so doesn't look any different :)

I was slightly disappointed though that the improvement in sound wasn't as much as I'd hoped considering 2 speakers had been added and better quality. Saying that there not the biggest of speakers so whatever you buy isnt going to blow you away I suppose
