Insurance cost
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:08:49 PM »

I've felt singled out for a long time in insurance.  My first car, a Mk1 Micra 1.2, I was 20, cost £999 to insure in 2001.

Up to about 2007 I had a string of better cars, up to a 1.9 turbo diesel, for which the fully comp premium was £200.

Since 2008 I've had a Primera 2.0, Cavalier 1.8, Micra Mk3 1.4, and now Brabbie.  My insurance has slowly crept up from that £200 to....... £1400 for Brabbie.  That's the cheapest quote for decent cover I could find.  I'm 31, no claims of 10 years, and only ever one speeding penalty in 2003...

Just wondering, those who don't mind sharing the info, how much you pay in insurance on your car (particularly the Brabus owners), and how old you are, how much no claims etc.

Cos I really feel like the insurers know something about me that I don't.

As has been suggested on another thread on here about insurance and the escalating costs of it, talk to specialists......the likes of Adrian Flux & Co (0800 369 8590),
or MSM Insurance (01279 870535). All mine are with MSM as they were the cheapest.
But that is just my experience.
JJ would suggest another company as he gets cash back through the QuidCo thing....

Anyway, try those 2 and don't forget to tell them that you're a member of the
SmartClub and ForFour.co.uk   and they should give you a discounted price.

Yeah I was thinking of phoning a couple of insurers who give me a 20% discount for my Micra club membership.

Just the wrong side of 40.
Clean lisence
Fully comp including full Business use, 25,000 miles per year
A couple of minor claims, but all non fault, so full bonus.
Kept on drive way in good post code area.
Approx half of what you are paying.
I also have a HUGE excess as it really helps bring the premium down.

As the Brabus is a specialist car, I would use a specialist company.
Get LOTS of quotes

I am currently with Aviva and was £340 (slightly cheaper the year before though Sheilas wheels)

i am 35, living in Bristol, max no claims, protected NCB and SDP use + business, sub 10k miles a year.
(i put the wife on who is in her 40s and that brings down the cost, as does home owner, child etc plus i also drive 2 other cars)

as for the quidco thing (G - you need to read up on it...haha) its not a company, its a cashback site that pays you referral bonus....whereas compare the market keeps that referral for themselves and sends you a free bloody meerkat....no ta!!

the reason i moved from sheilas wheels to a slightly more expensive aviva policy was because the quidco cashback on aviva was better at the time (£70) making my policy only really cost £270  8)

don't be afraid to move around!! loyalty is not rewarded anywhere nowadays  >:(

Interestingly I just did a quite comparison site rundown, and the cheapest quotes included one from my current insurer... at about 40% the cost of my current premium!!

Might have to look deeper into this one  ::)

yup - they are sneaky fks!!

i moved from direct line (was with them for 8years) when my renewal doubled my premium!

rang up and said i was leaving.....THEN they added a loyalty bonus!!

in the end, they said i was better off cancelling and taking out a new policy!! oh dear!!

well my pug306 is up for renewal in a few days and although aviva was one of the cheapest on my BRAB, for the pug, the quote was £500 which is £150 over my renewal from direct line and £200 over the cheapest quote!!

current cash back with aviva is £80

My insurance has increased somewhat as I have moved to Luton which is not exactly the best place to have a car.

I had no choice but to pay extra as it would have cost me more to cancel the policy and then the stress of finding a new insurer mid way through a policy isn't fun.

I was paying £325.00 for a fully comprehensive policy which has now increased to £375.00 due to the area that I live in.
I am 27 and have had 10 years no claims.

I have looked on confused.com and suchlike and they always find me a cheaper policy- I will be doing this when my insurance runs out at the end of March this year. I will also look to get Fox insured at the same time to try to help mitigate our costs.

Unfortunately issuing agents (AA, Avivia etc) are always changing their Underwriters- so whilst one year their underwriter would have covered you at a pretty good price, the next year they might have changed underwriters, thus explaining the increase in your premium.

Unfortunately if you are a man, you are at a disadvantage, same as if you live in an area with known car crime (like I now do).
The truth is that my car is more safe now as I have a garage and live next door to a policeman, but insurers only care about statistics.

It's ALWAYS worth shopping around. Give yourself a morning to really look around what cover is on offer and ask yourself "Do I really need to have no excess when I can afford to have a £200.00 excess in the event of an accident" or "Do I need European cover"- it's things like that that can save you some pennies.
Oh and it's always worth putting your other half on your policy, even if they don't drive the car.

I always ask my current insurer if they can do anything for me- if they can't I say goodbye.

Contacted MSM after the recommendations and they seemed to have come back with a good price, £250 less than best quote, but only if I can prove I have been a named driver for the last five years without a claim, so gonna have to try and get policy copies! £683 their price, they still beat our best quote with only 1 years no claims at £893, ok not by much but its a saving.

They seem a good bunch and responded fast and always answer emails.

See how it goes.

My insurance for me and my partner, is £929, that's because we only have 1 years no claims due to driving as named drivers and the fact that we are in Liverpool no doubt! I am 35, My partner is 39.

Imagine how much it would be for me on a Brabus?!

Turns out the only difference between my current £1500ish premium, and the £600 quotes I've had this week is my other half who's currently a named driver on an "occasional" basis.

She's only had her licence a couple of months, so that probably explains why they were trying to price her out of driving the car!!

Will take her off cover, she has her own car, and doesn't drive mine.  Might as well save a grand, or best part thereof!  :P

I wish I had a claim to at least justify the high costs we get quoted in the north!

Now that insurance is compulsory, some element of ability to pay should come into it. Progressive insurance like the taxation! They take account of your career so could just base it on that, could keep the no claims bonus idea also though

That'll never happen in this world.

Your job has a surprising effect on premiums. If I put myself as customer advisor, public transport, my premium is higher than if I put the equally accurate public servant.

Money saving expert has an interesting list of little loopholes you can use to reduce your premium without lying or otherwise non-disclosing info.

being married helps reduce costs

having dependants also helps reduce cost

i put my missus on who is older

garaged or drive helps reduce cost

over 30 or 35 helps reduce cost

postcode is one of the biggest drivers

(have a look here......mine is rated C in the A-F rating)
http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

given that i have the same car as you guys and i'm paying under £350 whereas you guys are nearly up to 4 figures..... it doesn't make sense :(
