Happy days!
« on: November 13, 2015, 09:18:06 PM »

This week my two forfours went into my local MB/smart dealer in Exeter for their 'Free Winter checks'. The Brab went in on Monday. I opted to wait so for about an hour I availed myself of their superb reception area with proper cakes, free hot/cold drinks, wifi, TV and Top Gear/Autocar magazines. When my car was returned, washed and vacuumed the only advisories were for a slightly dented alloy and a stiff gear linkage (which I lubed when I got home). As a gift I was presented with a rather tasty MB golf umbrella!
Today it was the turn of my 1.1. Same procedure as Monday. The only advisories this time were the two front tyres were down to 3.5mm and a split rear wiper blade! Again I was presented with a MB golf umbrella!
So all in all for two 10.5 year old cars I am very happy. True, I do drive and treat them both sympathetically and with respect and they are serviced and looked after within an inch of their lives!
Happy days.
 :)

2x golf umbrella's...and you don't even play ! !
I'll blagg/buy one off ya.....If you remember to keep them in the car/s,
and IF +when I see you next....

3.5mm tread on your 1.1 fronts  :o
I make a point in replacing mine when they get to 4mm....
which is what the 'boys in blue' do as the grip level drops
quite dramatically once you get below 4mm.

3.5 mm... There is still lots left in them. I start looking at 3 mm for new tyres.

The police get replace there tyres at 4mm cos they need the 'grip' due to the way they drive... Normal jo on the road wont notice a diffrence.

Ha ha, I'm keeping one brolly in each car! No, don't play golf. An expensive waste of a good walk IMHO! Will keep an eye on the tyres and have checked out a few prices.
Cheers.

As normal road tyres wear down to the marker doesn't the grip actually increase? As they get close to becoming like slicks. Other than in rain I would have thought dry grip would be pretty good.

The blocks move less and so become more predictable as well.
However this is outweighed by the ageing of the rubber by free radicals. This breaks down the chains of rubber making them harder, less elastic and less able to grip.
Tyre grip is not just a function of the amount of rubber on the road there is much more to it than that. Well done with the umbrellas!
