Done and dismissed unfortunately.

Tried a few rail ticket searches and cheapest was from thetrainline.

Alnmouth to Wolverhampton return is...... around £210  :(

Daylight damn robbery and an 8 1/2 hour round trip. Rather spend the £45 on diesel and drive it for 8 1/2 hours instead.

Right, got some more info from the seller.

I questioned him on the private reg (is he in the process of getting it removed and if so, was it via the DVLA or Post Office to give a timescale) This is the response  -

I just want to hold onto the log book to show it to the new owner as point of seeing the car to see so as they can see it in person not just a picture taken and then move from there, They have said that I have to fill in a V317 form in which I have now printed just in case and send them the original log book off still in my name to get the plate transferreed which they are saying takes 2 weeks along with the MOT and a copy of the tax disc, once it arrives back I then send it back to them again with your details and I am happy to print a reciept stating ownership and supply copies of all paperwork but they are saying you are welcome to take and use legally while it happens so long as insured on the private plate until the new one is issues.

Hmm... so I drive it away with his plates on then, from a specific date, the plates no longer apply and I put the old ones on? Surely that means that he also looses his set of plates from me unless I mail them back?

Never dealt with anything with a private reg but this strikes me as a bit odd. Also, I've googled this situation and is seems to bring up scare stories mainly for the seller. Guys buying the car and, seeing the reg belongs to the car, the new owner owns that reg.

Of course, google is a pit for negativity so this may just be scare stories.

Your opinion please folks. Seems more of a risk to him than it does to me.

the numberplate itself is worthless!!

is there a DVLA place near him??

if there is (there is one in bristol) you can pop in and they change all the documents there and then and then send the new v5c.

you normally have to sort the plate BEFORE sale.

If he lets you take the car before swapping the plate over then its just a trust thing that you won't keep the plate.

A plates a plate to me :)

No intention of being dishonest, especially as its "LFC" with "You'll never walk alone" on it! lol

If it was "WE57 HAM" I may be tempted though...

At the end of the day you having now defunct plates means nothing.  In the worst case (for him) you go off speeding in the car whith his custom plates on... which is only going to be an issue if he's gone and bought the same model and colour of car!

Wouldn't worry too much about it.  And wouldn't get "WE57 HAM" either unless you're sure you'll never have to drive through Millwall ;)

Just to add to this to clear up a little -

I bought a car that had a personalised plate attached. It was in the format of 'A1 ABC' - where ABC was his initials.

The driver kept it on the car for the same reasons, he had to do the paperwork and wanted to show me that he had an proper V5 for it. Once I agreed to the sale and the price, he wrote me a reciept for a deposit and he sent off the paperwork. It was back with him in just over a week. I then went over and we finalised the sale once he had the v5 back in his hand. It really wasn't too painful. Yes the plate was 'worthless' in the marketplace, but it had personal value to him so he wanted to keep it.
