Why paint vinyl?

I'm thinking some urban camo wrap for your wheels fox :)

Urban camo? Yuck!

If I wrapped the rims i would want to heat the vinyl so it shrinks into the embossed wording on the edges of the rim and then i would paint inside them. Thats the style it is now. I pretty much only want to wrap the diamond cut edge and centre.

Seems good though, i will consider.

But don't your wheels get hot after some hard braking? Wouldn't the vinyl unstick? Plastidip would be more durable i thin, I'm after some orange one for my dad's turquoise SX4 :o

Fox - you have to apply heat to the vinyl to get it to mould to shape and to cure the glue.

Alex - good point. Not sure what the melting point of the vinyl is (although you apply it with a heat gun so must be quite high) but I will experiment. Lots of companies are doing it so should be ok.
It's not going to be a long lasting solution but at £8 a wheel, it's a good option :)

I know JJ, i mentioned that :p

It probably wouldn't last too long but it's more of a temporary styling thing. I'd be tempted to try one wheel out for a week or so before doing the rest.

If I was to go down the 'plastidip' route, I'd rather go the whole hog and paint normally.

I've seen other products that claim to give great 'diy' paint finishes - like rustoleum's 'combicolor' although that does require a good prep job and can require some papering afterwards if you don't want an orangepeel effect. Apparently if you get your mix right and no bubbles, it can smooth itself well. Then again, that stuff will last a long, long time.

What about this stuff?

3M Primer94

It is intended to make the 3M tape (including I believe Di-Noc carbon vinyl) stay permanently in place.

That stuff is a good idea :) essentially its a bigger, badder, harder glue. Very nice.
