Windscreen replacement
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:14:22 PM »

Hi guys, Had my windscreen replaced and hear wind escaping into the cabin. After further inspection I found the rubber ends of the bottom panel that holds the bottom of screen? (not sure what its called?)was showing signs that something fitted over this? Can anyone confirm please.

Sorry photos not loading so please copy and paste this photobucket link for photos thanks. http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/PaulMarshall1977/media/Photo1616_zps776c4d94.jpg.html

That dark grey/black panel between the windscreen and the bonnet
doesn't seal anything as such, at least not the windscreen anyways.

Air escaping 'out' of the cabin....hmm, methinks you mean into it.
If you do suspect that, then I would call the windscreen fitter back
and tell him of your concerns, and that you would like a water check
undertaken.  No not with a watering can, but with a hose and the
water under some pressure.....to check for any leaks.
If it does, then they'll have to remove and replace/refit the screen.

Indeed. The screen is bonded to the surround, so regardless of any external trim missing or not there should be no ingress of air, water, anything.

but there is a difference between actual air getting into the cabin and the sound of air getting in.

we know a small piece of misplaced trim or a roof bar can make the car a noisy place to be.

the piece missing is clearly not a cosmetic piece.

So the 2 rubber cosmetic pieces could cause the sound of air rushing by?

See in this photo how the rubber that surrounds the glass goes under that mould along the bottom of the glass. Which is lifting the bottom mould off the glass. I this right? You can see from the reflection of my hand to the corner mould is starting to lift from glass.
more photos of how its meant to look welcome.
Thanks for your earlier pics and advice.

I would assume that the trim that is now missing was there to create a nice flow up the windscreen without the air whistling around the gaps and making noise.

Lots of modern cars have these little bits of trim all over them.

I would complain big time ASAP before they get binned.

Hmmmm...forgive me repeating as well...
The windscreen glass is bonded to the window surround with a special
mastic sealant that is applied all the way round (or should be !)
ON THE INSIDE, and not just the top n sides. Maybe he missed a bit/left
a gap in the mastic ?  Doubtful though, as windscreen fitters tend to be
very careful on that score.

There is nothing wrong with the way your black plastic skuttle panel
fits from what I can see in your picture. It looks no different to mine !

There are no screws or bolts to hold it in place, it just clips into a
plastic channel that is fixed to the bottom of the windscreen.
Perhaps it may not be pressed home fully, or have some muck/dirt
in the channel that it locks into. To clean it, follow the first 5 steps
in this guide http://www.forfour.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2832.0

Then when you have the black plastic skuttle off, clean the 'blade/edge'
on the inside of the panel, and then clean out the slot in the 'channel'
on the windscreen. When you have done that, then replace the black
plastic panel and press it firmly into place so that the blade slots into
the channel.  Finally refit the wiper arms and the metal skuttle panel
in the reverse order as per the guide above.

Yeah but I am pretty sure he isn't saying the air is flowing into the cabin.

Just saying it sounds like it.

What's missing is the rubber trim that makes an aerodynamic join between trid, scuttle and screen.

Smooth airflow = no sound.
Turbulent airflow = noisy wind.

But as you say, the scuttle looks correct really.

I understand that JJ, but looking at his picture, and then your picture,
and then at mine on my car....they all look exactly the same.
So, unless I'm totally blind I cannot see anything different or missing.
