my city coupe (fortwo) was 3 years ago... its now a small cube as it had to be crushed :( might have been 225, but like i said it was 3 years ago. my forfour on the other hand has now 16" wheels with 205/45/16 matador tyre fitted. Smart only made 1 16" wheel for the forfour to my knowledge

richgilb...you say your ForFour has 205 section tyres on it !
205/?/Rx?    What are the other figures on the sidewall of the tyre ?
Example:- 205/45/R15

Brab's are the only ForFour's that have 205 section tyres on....
on the front....205/40/R17

4 space savers??

Have you removed all weight?

Only fill up for your journey each way?

Block under accelerator to limit travel?

TBH if this is just about making money for yourself then you probably aren't gonna get much more than already posted. Have you looked into claiming tax back for business miles?

Let's go really OCD.......
Here are a few more suggestions that you could use to get more mpg
(or in your case, to get more mileage money) out of your 'work use only'
ForFour.

Tape over all the panel joins, to streamline the airflow over the car...
remove the door mirrors as they're like airbrakes/barn doors....
position the front wipers vertically for less drag....over inflate the tyres
for less rolling resistance (and grip), and/or fit 15" wheels with ultra
skinny 135/80/R15 tyres that won't let you do over 30mph round bends...
avoid any route that has hills to climb....coast or go into neutral down
any hills....turn off the ignition at traffic lights...never go over 56mph.....
don't use anything electrical (heater fan, wipers, heated rear window as
they will put a load on the alternator which in turn loads the engine)....
avoid driving when the wind blows from the direction you are heading to...
As has been said before, why not remove the seats (except the drivers),
and the carpet, as there's no point lugging that extra weight about.

The extra mpg gained from all those could help you squeeze even more
out of your employer's pocket to subsidize (amongst other things) the fuel
used by the BMW convertible you say you drive for 'social and domestic use'.

Seriously though....I think that you will find that nearly all of the Forum
members own their 'charismatic' ForFour for the pleasure and/or the fun
of owning it, as it is something different...special even. But most definitely
they do not own them for use as a 'work only' vehicle to spin money out of.

Space savers would be funny.

Actually I prefer the feel of smaller wheels too, at least I have on a BMW and an MX5 I once had. If I didn't, I would not make the change.

The space savers would only be funny for the first (recommended) 50 miles!  ;)

Right...reading back on the past posts reveals that you have 16" wheels...
and if they look like the Smart 15" 'Strokeline' alloys then you have the
Smart 'Movelines' which were the optional extra.

The correct tyre size that Smart fitted to the 16" was 205/45R16.
You can go one size up or down from that and still be ok.
So...down to 195's is ok...185's questionable.
Tyre choice for the 16" wheels is a lot more limited than for either
15" of 17" wheels.

So..if you want to reduce your rolling resistance, either buy some
15" alloys/steels and get/have them fitted with 195/50R15's (original fit)
or 185/55R15, or 14" steels with 175/60R14's.
You could then sell off your 16" Smart wheels...(preferably on this forum),
or possibly someone will offer an exchange for their 15'S or 14" steelies.

Decide what you want to do, ok.
PS...if you want to be considered for an exchange, PM richgilb
with all details...bearing in mind he is located in Hull.
NB:-  DO NOT post offers in this thread....they will be deleted immediately.

Are smaller wheels (14") better for economy around town and larger wheels better for motorway economy? (Trying to engage brain)

Overall diameter of tyre and wheel the same otherwise speedo will be effected, but what changes is the size if the rim 14-17" on the smart and the size of the tyre side wall.

Economy effected more so by tyre width firstly, then by wheel tyre weight- the larger the rims the more heavy they and the tyres are, this = more unsprung weight as well.

14" wheels will have tyres with a bigger sidewall which should improve ride comfort, but, the narrower tyres will reduce grip at the limit but increase fuel economy. I think all of that is right.

I've recently part-ex'd a 1.3 Passion for a 1.5 Passion and while it's definitley more powerful it's correspondingly thirstier. Pretty sure the hire-car ForFour I drove for a week years ago was the three-cylinder engine so I've driven 3 different sizes!

The other factor with narrower wheels is less drag, coupled with a set of 'moon discs' you could potentially improve your economy further ;)

I actually prefer narrower wheels over 'fat' alloys, much more fun to drive :)
