Excellent :)

Just got back from near Ubeda in your fab country and saw quite a few Smarts pootling around (ForFour, fortwo and EV) - so there must be plenty of independents around to help?

Anecdotally, I think small, economic cars are in fashion everywhere now, but they were fashionable in Spain for a long while (where cars are more expensive and parking in Barca / Madrid seems to be much harder in residential areas)

In any case, you're spot on - there are 3x ForTwos that park around my immediate area, but I've got the only ForFour on my block :) I have a lovely photo of my F4 nose-to-nose with a ForTwo and it looks rather sweet, actually :)

I'll upload it sometime soon...

Anecdotally, I think small, economic cars are in fashion everywhere now...

Small ? ?   Ha ! !
The Polo is now bigger than the original Golf ...
The Corsa is bigger than the original Nova it replaced....
The Fiesta is now bigger than the original....
The Focus is bigger than the Escort...
The Micra is now bigger than the original...
The FIAT 500 is now bigger than it's original...
The Astra is now bigger than the original...
The Insignia which replaced the Cavalier etc is now as big as the
old Carlton, and on a similar scale, the Mondeo that replaced the
Cortina has grown to be as big as the old Granada/Scorpio...

In fact all the new small cars are at least 1/3rd bigger than the first
or original models of the 80's/90's that they replaced, and none more
so than the BMini.....the latest of which is not far short of Mondeo size !
And they call it a Mini....ha... there was more room inside the original.

Irrespective of the crash/safety factors and influence, one has to ask
the question WHY is this ?

Thinking about it....the ONLY car that has got smaller is the ForFour  :o

I think you're right - cars are definitely getting bigger.

But from the range of cars which are available, people round here (at least) are more apt to pick from the smaller ones.

You see a lot of Polos, some VW Go!'s and ForTwos around here, for example - along with small 50cc cars (don't need a car license! They are basically 4 wheel mopeds) - definitely a popular choice to go for the economic ones.

And parking can be a nightmare, I read somewhere that Barcelona has one of the highest car densities in the EU, and I can tell you from personaly experience, I've spent 4 hours looking for parking and ended up over a mile from home. It makes sense not to buy land rovers (for example) around here, unless you got private parking.

G'day CrazyG and Telsblay, Yes cars have grown, but so have people by about 1/3, maybe that's why.
My 2 cents worth.....lol.

Wow that’s a pretty comprehensive list but I think you may have missed 1, maybe 2 hahaha

Anyway, back on topic 8)

Meguiars PlastX is awesome

There is a bit of light in the second photo which makes the left side look worse than it is, but let me assure you I did the worst side first and the difference is pretty spectacular.

I finally replaced my front right wing!

I paid 50 euro for a used wing, delivered, in good condition... and then another 100 euro to colour-match and repaint it... Not cheap, but the bodywork is now much, much better.

(Some of you guys are finding whole cars over there with good bodies for 200 quid, so there's an idea of how much cheaper you lot in the UK have it... )

A little story there... when they repainted my brand-new second-hand wing the first time, they used metallic paint.. right base colour but I don't have metallic paint on the car.. oops... I had to tell them to respray it again, which they did immediately (24h and pick up) and the paint now matches perfectly. At least I have peace of mind knowing I've got an extra layer of paint protection on that wing - and they fixed it without any fuss or extra cost to me - so bonus, really.

Getting the entire assembly off was not too hard, I had help and we did it in a car park with some cardboard on the ground to protect the new paint once the bodywork was off the front of the car.

On the back of that panel I found some ugly stuff.... most clips missing, everything stuck back together with epoxy - not a complete bodge job, I think whoever fixed it was working with a completely wa****ed front end and did their best. Externally, it didn't look as bad as it really was. However I'm glad the worst of it is now replaced with a like-new proper solid panel.

Behind all this I also found that part of the metal frame where the impact bar is bolted, has crumpled ever so slightly - probably by design - and that's the main reason for the front body panel being slightly out of alignment with the hood. However it's not the end of the world, I'm minded to leave as-is, or try straighten it myself in the future as it's really only cosmetic.

I also found the left hand light cluster has a broken top mount point, which explains why it wobbles ever so slightly in it's space. Again, no MOT failure and it's not going to fall out anywhere, so I'm cool for the moment with that.

Finally, I took the weatherseal I removed from around the engine bay and cleaned all the old glue off of both the rubber and the car with Acetone, a plastic scraper and a toothbrush, and put the weatherseal back on with brand new 3M double sided automotive tape. It took hours, but it's stuck down much much better now.

Overall, a very informative disassembly, but nothing really there that I didn't expect to find.
I took a couple of photos but my 5-yo iPhone ran out of battery before I got the front end off properly. Sad. I'll post any pics that I did manage to take (if informative), later.

Oh yeah! and I recently got some new Brembo brake pads to put on the front. I'm just waiting to get some new discs as well to replace the set together.

It passed the MOT as-is so I'm not in massive rush to change these... but I also believe it's more important how your car stops, than how it goes - so I'll get the best I can afford and do it properly.
