Not worth getting your gearbox rebuilt rather than replace it completely? Least then you have a better idea of the history et al.

i cant afford my car to be off the road too long, my mum drops and pick my daughter from nursery.

as for the boxes 'G' has found they all say 1.3/1.5 engines, yet when you look at the compatibility list it says for all petrols.

Never trust the compatibility list that eBay applies!!

Trust the breaker who specifically breaks colts ;)

i agree but when the listing title says 1.3/1.5... you would also be hesitant.

anyway iv messaged one seller who has a box listed as 1.3/1.5 and has said its for a 1.5, so if sent him an offer for it.

it cant be the same box for both engines as the gear ratios would be different.

top speed for the 1.3 is 112mph and the 1.5 a top speed of 118, i honestly dont think an extra 14bhp will increase the top speed, and with mine having 120bhp it 'should', easily manage over 120mph

The 1.3 and 1.5 petrol manual gearboxes are identical.
The 1.3 and 1.5 petrol AMT gearboxes are identical.
The 1.1 manual gearbox is specific to the 1.1
The 1.1 AMT gearbox is specific to the 1.1
The CDI/D-iD manual gearbox is the same for the 68 and 95hp.
The CDI/D-iD AMT gearbox is to same for the 68 and 95hp.
The Brabus/CZT/CZC Turbo manual gearbox is the same in all of them.

If you don't believe the info on this site nor the info from a well renound breaker of colts but would rather believe auto generated compatibility data from ebay then so be it ;)

maybe check the EPC??

So what was the final culprit here? I have strange no sir noise as well but when I'm coasting. Sometimes vibrating noise (but no vibrations in car, it's like driving over lane line that is ribbed) and sometimes just whine.

my noise was the gearbox as when i was driving and i put the clutch in the noise would go and it happens from 2nd through to 5th, although the tech at mercedes was stood outside and said he noticed the noise whiles i setting off in 1st.

a 2nd hand gearbox from a colt sorted the issue, as well as some gear oil

You people start to replace transmission oil just like engine oil. Every oil that works, need replacing. When I bought my 454 it had 93k mileage. Replaced all oils and filters. Gearbox showed nice black nasty sludge when drained it. Viscosity of water. Lovely. Great for gears.

And all that oil can be created endlessly from CO2 in the air by oil companies. So do not hesitate and worry about environment.

Deszus, ill give you the FULL back ground story of my SB3 under my ownership.

im the 7th owner, had NO service history that came with it although i knew it had had an oil and filter change before the 6th owner bought it. when i got the car in November 2015 it had ticked over to 83,000 miles. as a result i figured next service ill replace all the fluids, the service light came on in February 2016 and serviced the engine. a few months later i replaced the gear oil and added some liqui moly gear oil additive, as i didnt know how the previous owners looked after it or drove it.
when the oil was drained it was a little dark but i wouldnt say it was sludge like.

in early December 2016 it had done around 92,000 miles and i replaced the clutch, yet another gear oil change was done as when i removed the drive shafts i lost a lot of oil (looked like the same viscosity when it flowed out) and topped up with some oil that i had got from the local motor factors.

i wasnt happy that it has 2 different makes of oil in it, so a week later, replaced the gear oil. again no difference in viscosity from the previous 2 times.

in November 2017 the gear box started getting noisy and mid December the gear box was replaced.

in the space of 2 years i replace the gear oil 3 times on 1 gear box.

i have bought more gear oil for my forfour than engine oil... an expense that i could have done without.

as iv mentioned before Deszus stop having a go at others for not doing what you are doing to your forfour. iv seen Jags go for over 150,000 miles on the same gear oil, i replaced the gear oil on my uncles civic at 195,000 miles when i replaced the clutch, so you cant say gear oil should be changed like engine oil. engine oil and gear oil work in different environments. gear oil works in a 'sealed' environment where contamination isnt possible from other sources, where as engine oil can become contaminated by fuel. as a result the engine oil HAS to be replaced yearly where as gear oil can effectively be used for life. yes, replacing it will do the gear box good BUT at the expense and time which most wont want.
