Self Service?? Would you?
« on: November 30, 2013, 11:00:40 PM »

Given that our cars resale is pretty low and that full MB history means nothing, thought I might as well just service the car myself.

Now I've not done a service before and I need to do plugs, but surely £100
for materials and 2 hours in the cold is better than £400 at Merc ??

And it really is as simple as.....

OIL: filter off, drain oil, refil.
PLUGS: unscrew and replace (would need a plug removal tool i think)
AIR FILTER: no filter needed as I have induction kit
CABIN AIR FILTER: replace
KEY FOB: replace battery

No need to flush engine or do anything else serious ?!?!

Thoughts ??

JJ

I would say do it. The money you save (over a merc job) can be used to get the best quality parts/oil for the car (spark plugs, mobil 1 etc)

It's certainly an area where you can save yourself a fair amount of money. Let's face it we all trust garage staff to do everything on the service schedule, but in reality car servicing across the nation is largely a rip off. Most of the checks required on a service are duplicated by the MOT hence the £99 service and MOT that is so common now. So you can do the filters, plugs and oil change after an MOT and deal with the advisories too. The only thing that you can't do is a diagnostic check, but if no faults are indicated then surely that can be left until an insurmountable fault arises. I'd say go for it and mark up your own book and keep your oil and parts receipts with the rest of the history.
Car servicing has to be a bit easier now. When I did my own servicing I remember one of my cars had eighteen grease nipples on the front suspension. Brake drums had to come off all four corners to check linings and cylinders for leaks. Ignition points replaced, timing set up, tappets adjusted, back axles and propshafts to be checked as well as gearboxes.
Yes definitely go for it ;) let Merc do the MOT and you might get a free health check too.

Did just that recently on my 1.1 Passion JJ. Also checked tyres, brakes, underbody & exhaust, lubed gear linkage, debugged the air con, removed scuttle panel and cleared out dead leaves and crap... and valeted the car inside and out! Plugged in my OB2 reader... no apparent faults (yes I know that it isn't STAR diagnostics). The car ran great afterwards and had a new spring in it's step! Dated the service book and reset the service indicator too!! ;) Think I might get myself a stamp made up! Lol!

That's not due for some months JJ but no I haven't yet. Will certainly think about it next time though. As you say all pretty straightforward and if all receipts are kept for parts should be ok. I think that service history is important but overall condition of the car would be my number one concern. I would be happy to show any prospective purchaser 'over' the car to indicate that I knew what I was talking about/doing... which is exactly what I did back in August when I sold my Citroën 2CV. The buyer was more than happy.

I serviced my mums 1.1 yesterday!
only a one spanner so didnt do plugs but after the i replaced the oil, filters and put some injector cleaner in there it was done!
There is so much space around the 1.1 it was nice to work on and I even replaced the aux belt as it was squealing its t*ts off :)
Only problem I had is the alarm kept going off when I had finished, and thanks to this this site I pulled fuse 28 out for a min and put back in.
All works as it should
 ;D

I would have thought the only reason for anyone to want to pay for someone to service any vehicle would be for two reasons, firstly if you didn't have the knowhow or confidence to do it and secondly to get your stamps to keep the value of the car up.

I've always done my own services and as mentioned it enabled me to choose the best quality oil and plugs etc with the money saved.

JJ you seem to have both the knowhow and as you said the resale is pretty low these days so i'd go for it and save £300!

JJ there are no special tool you need to do a service yourself.

our cars have on plug coils instead of HT leads, so its a case of undo the bolt holding the coil on and the rest of the job is a a piece of cake.

That's right but just don't do what my mate did and tried to undo them the wrong way! Ended up having it drilled out and rethreaded at a cost of £200 (seat Leon)
