Sigh.....please factor in my circumstances then. My employer will pay me 6000 a year car allowance and will pay me 21p per mile for petrol or lpg cars up to 1.6. Or 14p for diesel up to 1.6

Haha  ;D

Everyone else apart from the OP seems to know better on online forums!  ;)

Lpg talk always brings out this argument. I should never have mentioned it!

it does i'm afraid. we all know too many people who have had issues with LPG conversions. MrSingh is a mechanic/technician for jag, volvo (what else?) and has seen some lovely jags butchered by LPG conversions.

There was a guy on here with a smart LPG conversion and was having huge issues.

For those who don't get £6k a year, the LPG is too expensive to install, risky and unreliable to be a viable option.

I think the 1.3 is the best option tbh. but i would go for a higher spec (heavier) passion with the glass roof - it makes the car IMHO

Excellent. Progress indeed. So the smart brochure quotes manual only mpg figures. 51.4 for the 1.1, 48.7 for the 1.3 and 46.3 for the 1.5....what % increase do you reckon there is for the auto? The technical data quotes a tiny difference in litres per 100km.

Not so! MT = Manual transmission, AMT = Softtouch.  :)

Can I be a pedant here and say I noted that....it is quoting litres per 100km for all types, but mpg for petrol manual cars only. And it looks like there is a tiny difference in efficiency when using this less familiar measure?

much rather an ex police volvo!!

why is there such a big price difference between petrol and diesel pence per mile?
when i worked at Jaguar Leeds i was told to go in my own car to leamington spa for training and it was 40p per miles for own car use regardless of fuel type and it was 31p for diesel and a bit less for petrol if you had a company car

I am going to look at this on Friday:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201307237959746/sort/default/usedcars/transmission/automatic/fuel-type/petrol/engine-size-cars/1l_to_1-3l/model/forfour/make/smart/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/page/1/postcode/hu53dr?logcode=p

Couple of questions on viewing: does it have the narrowest alloys available and how do I check the gearbox is working ok?

Right that car has had a replacement exhaust, to me it doesn't look the right diameter. To check the gearbox you will have to take it on a test drive, first thing to do whilst its on the drive is to select reverse, take it from 1st/A to R - it takes a quick flick otherwise it will throw up an error.

On the test drive, auto mode will feel laggy but this normal - manual mode should feel smooth and quick. The car will hesitate at junctions if you attempt to pull away whilst slowing down.
