Puncture Repairable Yes or No?
« on: March 26, 2014, 02:49:00 PM »

Got an annoying situation with a puncture in a tyre with loooads of life left in it. Been to a garage and they are unable to repair it as it is too close to the shoulder. I have used this garage a few times and they've been good, i have no reason to doubt them and i wasn't charged anything for their time, they won't even be supplying the new tyre.

Just wanted a second opinion, maybe they are erring on the side of caution a little too much as they state they will only repair a puncture on completely flat part of the tyre as they don't want to be liable if the repair should fail under cornering.

Opinions?

Does look close to the edge, you may find someone willing to repair it......but would you then worry about it potentially blowing doing a ton on the motorway or cornering at a decent speed?

It's a pain in the a** but I think you may have to bite the bullet for safety and piece of mind  :(

And additional info...

...I personally would say your tyre is dead unfortunately as it would be possibly unsafe to repair.

however............... i think its a money making thing.

my brother in law bought a tyre repair "kit" off the internet. You poke the thing through the hole and then remove it and it seals the hole.

he has repaired punctures himself on his bid diesel VAG that garages won't.

i can dig out the info if you want?

Although you could repair it yourself, if the repair was to be a contributory factor in an accident, I bet the insurers would use that as an excuse not to pay out. I wouldn't chance it.

"unable to repair it as it is too close to the shoulder"

This is a joke?
 :-\
Just is a little nail, fi max 3 mm.
No cut, no split, no big hole. The tire net is only separating by nail - all will be OK  when we take out nail.
Find another tire service.

KwikFit diagram - sorry but they making money selling new tires sets.

This sort of kit was about years ago and I've used them, but they are not really legal now. If you look at the ad it says in red " temporary repair only". It's not a permanent repair and you'd be in a sticky legal position if you had a blowout and subsequent crash.

I was driving before tyre laws and have seen tyres down to the canvas before steel braced radials were invented. Be grateful to the pen pushers and their laws they save lives.

well yes - but thats different.

this is like the law makers saying no tyre can ever be repaired!!

also, companies like kwik-fit etc will not even fix runflats and state that if you have driven on a run flat when its flat then it needs to be replaced - whats the point of a run flat then?!?!

sorry - must just be me but that tiny little hole is repairable!! if you had tyre seal in there, you wouldn't have even known there had been penetration but the tyre seal gel isn't made illegal nor is it classed as temporary - in fact its sold as a safety product - go figure....

No lawmakers aren't saying tyres can't ever be repaired. The parameters for repair circumstances have been worked out, agreed and legislated on and that's what the tyre trade work on. A proper repair within the right area is a vulcanised internal patch and not a plug pushed in with some adhesive from outside. As for runflats you won't find many people who will repair them because there is no way of telling if they have been damaged while being used in their emergency travel whilst deflated. Punctures are quite rare for any of us now and that's why they fit those awful kits instead of a spare wheel. I would only have a proper puncture repair done if I went outside and found the tyre flat. I would never have a tyre repaired if I'd driven on it flat.
That tyre sealant looks interesting as it's preinstalled and not used as an emergency measure. I wonder why more people don't take it up if it's supposed to be that good. If you do install it you're still supposed to inspect your tyres for cuts and damage. Maybe that's the achilles heel of the system as people may think they can forget about their tyres.
