forfour sump damage ??
« on: July 12, 2013, 12:40:18 PM »

hi, please can anyone tell me how big a job it is to replace the sump on my forfour 1.5 diesel.

my son decided to drive it down a rocky lane and  has put a 40mm long gash approx 6mm wide in the lower part just behind the exhaust clamp ?
thanks!

Hi! Bad luck there! I'm thinking that it is a very easy job to just unbolt one and bolt on the other. Things you need to make sure of are to fit a new gasket and torque the bolts correctly.

You should have no trouble replacing the sump...and gasket.
The only 'problem' area might be getting to the bolts where the
exhaust goes under the engine at the joint of the gearbox....
but I reckon there is enough space to get to the bolts.

New sump....2x part numbers for it.
A 6390100513   and    A 6390100613
Gasket ...again 2x part numbers for 1 part ?
A 6390140322   and    A 6390140422

Assume the higher numbered one supercedes the other....

If you decide to use a gasket 'sealant', choose a silicone type as it stays flexible.

'G' one could possibly be for the 3 pot and the other for the 4 pot engine?!

Both 'pairs' of part numbers show for the 3 pot 1.5 CDI    :D

('pot' is a alternative word that is used for 'cylinder'....so 3 pot
   is actually 3 cylinder...OK ?)

thanks for the help, i looked under the car but it was hard to see due to it being so low.
the sump looks like it is connected to the gearbox.
do you know if it is possible to remove the sump without having to disturb or remove the box  ?

No, the sump is not connected to the gearbox in any way! It is a separate item held on by a series of star headed bolts. You need a set of ramps or axle stands. DO NOT be tempted to get under the car without them!

Hi again! In my opinion for the relative small outlay I would certainly buy a new gasket as well. Make sure that you thoroughly clean off any of the old gasket before fitting. Then it'll be job done and never need to do it again!  ;)

Get a new gasket too - it's probably relatively cheap

Hope that this helps. Seems that I might have been wrong and the transmission one does have to be removed as well! Also there is mention of sealing compound not a gasket! Ooops! Still shouldn't be too tricky (he says optimistically!) Let us know how you get on!
