It happens only if I leave my stereo on and turn the car off.  If I then start the car, it starts and the stereo fires up.  Then the beeps happen, and the stereo turns off.

My best guess is it's some kind of protection against overloading the electrics when starting the car.

Is yours a sony by any chance?
In my previous forfour i had a cheapo aldi or lidl stereo in and had no problems at all for the 3 years I had it

its not the beep to tell you your key is still in the lock??

is your boot/other doors shut properly??

Ill double check and give them a slam but unsure why this would cut the stereo out, ive tried 2 sony's in it and both act the same. It also beeps when i remove the key And open the door to get out......

could be an indication of your battery being low....

Try this -

Drive along and raise your handbrake. Listen to the beeps. If they sound the same tone, from the same place, It's a general alert from the car and not from your stereo speakers. That might help.

I would suggest unplugging your head unit ISO connector for a little bit and trying to induce the same conditions as when it beeps. This should hopefully help you isolate the issue to Stereo / Non-stereo.

It doesnt beep with the stereo disconnected so it must be a stereo issue but im not sure what. Im assuming the forfours have standard iso wiring layout unlike peugeots

Definitely not related to the handbrake warning - definitely related to the stereo.

I haven't been able to get the noise except when starting the car and the stereo was left on.

As I have an aftermarket headunit it must be something to do with the power supply to the stereo.

Ive fixed it now i think it was to do with can bus nonesense

I simply wired up the permenant 12v and the switched 12v on the stereo together so its all permenantly live and it works spot on even when ignition is off. I dont recall having to do this on my old forfour but i have been to sleep since then so probably forgot!!

Just check your battery every now and again, stereo wiring that is permanently on can drain your battery, its probably some warning that the stereo is still on that the wiring has in it, couldn't say for sure though.

It's obviously power related then.

I'll keep investigating, as I prefer to keep my stereo on switchable live.

The best way to resolve would be splice a wire from The switched live off the cigarette lighter and wire it to the switched live on the stereo, i just couldnt be bothered to do it :p

Mine had a switched live hidden behind the stereo, although I only knew that because a previous owner had installed a Parrot using it.

The Sony stereo in S2smarts courtesy car beeps when the ignition key is removed and the doors
are opened. Close the door and set the alarm and it shuts off.
Same as a different Sony did in my ForTwo cabrio.

I dont think the issue is sony specific as most if not all aftermarket stereos dont use can bus opting for a switched live which is standard.

Perhaps its just sonys that throw their toys out the pram and others just get on with it!
