Used Brabus
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:26:48 PM »

Are there any specific points I need to check if I am viewing or test driving one?
Thanks.

(I didn't own a Brabus ForFour when I wrote this. Since then I have owned/used and sold one.)

Not owning a Brabus I can only advise what I have picked up over the years....
1/ service history....I'd say this is a 'mandatory' requirement.
2/ timing belt changed...a necessity....proof of it being done.
3/ leaking shockabsorbers...rears seem to be the most troublesome.
4/ flat spotted orig wheels....corroded/laquer lifted.....needing expensive refurb.
5/ brake discs...check for lip edges...may need replacing.

I guess there'll be some Brab owners along shortly to add their thoughts/comments.

Have a good read round this forum.

Thats what I did, even though I did not register or post until I had owned it for six months and wanted to know how to service it.....

In no particular order:

The wheels are very soft and expensive to replace.  They may not be round any more.  If just in poor condition, they can be refurbed at approx £70.  This will make them look nice, but will NOT make them round again.  A NEW wheel is approx £300.  There are plenty of second hand ones about, but mostly they are, err, very second hand...

The cam belt has to be changed every 60,000 miles, as well as the tappets.  If the car is over this milage, check they have been done.  If the car is under this milage, factor it into your haggling.

It needs an oil change every 6,000 miles, even though the service indicator wont show this.  Check its been done.

Put the lights on with the engine off and listen to each head light.  If you can hear the height adjustment motor running constantly, you need to replace the light unit, which will involve a few hours of labour as the front body work has to be replaced.

Sat Nav Discs are expensive.  If the mapping is out of date, you need to buy a new disc.
Brake discs and pads are expensive.  When were they last changed?  You can get some idea of their condition by looking through the wheels.

Other than that, only what you would expect for 5 to 7 year old car.
Check EVERYTHING electrical works (including the AC).
Check it drives & stops striaght.  Check the clutch is not slipping.
Look underneath for corrosion, evidence of damage, or evidence of previous repairs.  While you are under there, check for fluid leaks.
Look at tyre condition.  Even wear?
Does the engine smoke, check for mayo in the oil filler or the expansion tank?
Do all the doors open & shut correctly.  Even panel gaps?
I am quite new to Smarts, so I am sure someone will be along in a minute to add everything I have missed or dont know about.
There is one listed for sale here that looks like a bargin, if you are in the right part of the world.

The BRAB is a pretty strog car (mechanically)

Rear shocks do weep
Wheel bearings have been known to go but not common
Wheels are soft but don't let that put you off - of they hold air and look ok then they will be fine (but do expect peeling of lacquer) - and a rubber mallet soon straightens them out)

Just check the standard things..... Does it start? Smoke? Sound nice? Check exhaust, brakes etc. Drive it and don't be afraid of giving it some.

There is a good one in the for sale section

ye sure about the tappets? a modern engine doesnt really need the tappets checking.

Most important make sure the gear lever is nice and free ie it returns to centre after changing from 5 or first if it's stiff it's a lot oaf work to free it off apart from that the brabus is amazing

I know you have said that before and I agree that it is very unusual that they need adjusting, and that often adjustment requires buying shims etc, so it is not something that you want to be doing every service.

However, it clearly states in the service schedule that they should be checked.  There is a reason for this.  Some people may be happy not to bother doing this, just in the same way, some poeple never have their car serviced unless it breaks down or fails an MOT.

There may be another component in the engine which is wearing.  Early identification of this may save money in the long run.

At 60,000 miles, it would be surprising, with normal wear, that adjustments needed to be made.  What about 120,000 or 180,000 miles?  Do you want it sounding tapperty just for the sake of carrying out a routine service item?  I tend to do quite a high milage and I tend to kepp my cars for quite a long time.  There is nothing wrong with driving round in a high milage car, if it is looked after properly, it should look, sound, drive & feel like a low milage car.  One thing that I have learnt is that scimping on servicing usualy results in big bills later.

Sorry, rant over, back to topic.  The gent asked what he should check before buying.  As tappets (&cam belt) should be checked / changed at 62,250 miles, but sometimes arnt, and as they may be expensive, I thought it was worth pointing out that if his car was above that, he should check they had been done, or if approaching that milage, he should be aware they would be due.

I finally decided one and got one. p/x my 1.1 passion.

i noticed a box like metal under the passenger's seat. I didn' notice this box on my passion. It is not the under seat storage. Is this specific on the brabus?

It is the basic brabus spec. my passion already got heated leather seats so the new things I got by upgrading to the brabus is the electric mirrors, rear electric windows, cd changer, and of course the EXTRA POWER!

The UK never had the 'basic Brabus spec' as you put it.
In fact, the UK got what the rest of Europe knew as the 'Xclusive' version,
with lots more equipment as standard.

But even so, there were many other additions/options/packs that could be had....
1. Radio6 or Command instead of the Radio5....
2. Electric glass front sunroof instead of panoramic polycarbonate front roof...
3. Monobloc 'A' wheels vice Monobloc IV's....
4. Headlight washers...
5. HID's (coupled with headlight washers and self leveling headlight adjustment)...

Then there were other extra's....
a. rear side door sun screens
b. tailgate sunblind
c. transmission tunnel drink/magazine holder
and there were even more bits that could be had when the car was ordered or after.

It was loaded with so much more goodies than a 'basic' Passion.
