Bit of a drag
« on: September 09, 2017, 08:56:36 PM »

Twice now when driving in 5th or 6th gear I have noticed  the car drives as if the hand break was being applied for a second a few times every minute, just feel it slightly . There is no change to the RPM s. My car is the 1.5 petrol with auto box . I do think I need a new clutch ,would the auto box do this or is it something like coil on the way out ,is there a single coil or more .

If it was a coil, the effect of it failing would be present all the time I would though, not just in the higher gears.

Will check the wheels ,but it feels more of a power loss but  just a second  RPM does not change.

The clutch ?  If the rev's don't change/drop then that's highly unlikely to be
the issue to be honest.

It could possibly be showing 'early' symptoms, or signs, or even a sort
of 'warning' that you may quite soon encounter 'limp mode' ! That of
course being down to the TVA and MAF getting a bit clogged/gunged up.
So, how about giving them a clean, just so that we can rule out that
aspect or possibility...assuming it still continues to exhibit that 'flat
spot' that you say you feel you are getting.

ESP does have the ability to apply individual brakes without your direct input, if it senses the car is nearing the limits of where it should be moving, i.e. sideways. So.. it could be a faulty sensor, although I think repeated or permanent sensor faults should disable ESP completely (correct me if I'm wrong)

I've read some people out there on forums have had some issues with the yaw sensor. As long as the ESP doesn't know the sensor is faulty it will react to strange inputs and can apply individual braking when you least expect it.

Funnily enough when I first saw your post I thought of that, but I'm no expert so I wouldn't have chipped in, except you mentioned that you have seen the ESP light. ESP can definitely pulse your brakes which seems to fit your description.

You should defo get it checked and read the error codes from memory, rule it out at least. Any ESP errors you saw on the dash will be logged in more detail. As everyone tells me, MB Star is best for this.

Followed Crazy G 10 minutes clean of air intake. Open bonnet all ok there, open air filter to see how that was ,need new one put air filter back in ,drop closing clip down back of battery. Does not come out bottom of car. Take battery out can not see it, think jack up car look under . can't get in boot battery out. Find other jack no clip take out air box no clip, take out battery box see clip on top gearbox playaround  getting it out. Put all back, can't get top on air filter take all out put air box and filter together try to bend clip so won't fall off again cut finger ,get help to stop blood.put all back in with air filter in place .(missed the bit where the first time I put it all back I used new push on clips to air intake to body ,from Honda I had, just little bit bigger nice fit ,but had to drill out to take apart second time).Ok so not happy 1 and1/2  hours later and nothing done .take car for run ok happy again and for some reason I have not had any troubles with the auto box not a single 0 , normally get one every time I go from  A to R. Now also have flame affect on bonnet from blood.

I've read some people out there on forums have had some issues with the yaw sensor.......

Those comments on forums for Smart cars are usually for the
ForTwo and Roadster, not the ForFour.

Blood sacrifice has pleased AMT gods.

If the wheels are different sizes you could get ESP intervention at high speed because car thinks the smaller wheels are slipping (the higher the speed the bigger the difference in rotation speed because the smaller wheels have to turn faster to cover the same distance) You should get the traction control flash on the dash.

If you hold it in 4th and accelerate past the speeds you normally cruise at in 6th does it happen?

When blood fails, AMT usually demand a sacrifice of pound notes instead.
