The headlights on my red bug were outside, know 2 golfs that were outside too. I think the toothpaste was the issue. We tried lots on the red bug before finding the Megs kit. 3m & a turtlewax one both did 'something' but quickly got bad again. Toothpaste did nothing.

The inlaws Toyota Alex (corolla) suffered terribly from the cloudy plastic headlamps and we managed to get the gleaming with a LOT of elbow grease and a cheaper 3M style kit off ebay

When I look at my headlights from different angles I can see the 'haze'
or yellowing is not from the surface but appears to be on the inside.
maybe my issue is different to others...or they're all a mix of both.

I'll have mine apart soon anyway and then 'really' get to find out
what the issue is. Mind, i do have a spare set of headlights that
i can cannibalize for the covers if necessary (for my 'blacked out' units).

 >:(     I've never used 100w bulbs in any of my Smarts....
besides...the wiring/loom wouldn't cope with the current draw.
Cat's whiskers are thicker than the wiring in the headlights  :o

In the absence of reasonable weather to sort the headlights i've swapped the satnav unit out and put the Radio 6 in. Sadly (as per the last time I did it on my first forfour) I managed to break the lugs off the control backings. Oh well, I doubt it makes much difference.

Also noted I had heater control bulbs blown, so it's all apart outside and i'll get some of those on order. Oh and I changed the pollen filter. Still got a new alternator belt to go on, that'll have to wait.

The headlamps that need polish/restoration kit, will not stay that way. In fact they will get hazy/yellow/scratched even faster (a lot faster than before). The problem is that the restoration kit will probably give you an excellent result, but the surface will be totally ripped of the UV protection layer. Plastics can't stand UV light, and they tend to fade, get yellow, or even crack.

The solution is to get a UV protective layer on it after you polished it.
Either a UV coating with varnish/lacquer (don't know what is correct, google-translate gave both expressions as ok :P), something like http://www.dickblick.com/products/sennelier-acrylique-lacquers/. I really don't know what product are suitable for car headlamps out of this category.
Or the one I'm going to do to my headlamps... Get a UV protective transparent cover sheet on it. The garages that do the blacked windows/smoked taillights over here have these and can apply them nicely around the curved form of the headlamps (the headlamps have to be removed!, the body panel is too intrusive over the exterior of the lamp). These can also be scratch-resistant (the more expensive stuff), I saw these applied to a Focus back in 2006, the headlamps still look on it as in the show-room  :)

These are some pictures from the garage I want to go to:

I'm almost sure that you can get this treatment in the UK too.

JJ that is for glass. The headlamps are plastic, so probably that is not good.

Same for the side-back-window triangle, had to use a different coating material when they blacked out the windows on my 44.

Well already i've replaced the forfour with something else. I'll flog it in the new year. It was fine for it's original purpose, but it made me realise that running a fortwo and doing 25k a year in it (when I didn't particularly need to have something that small) was a bit daft. So i've now got a 450, a SEAT Leon (and a Crossblade). New forfour didn't interest me at the price, i've paid a similar amount and got a superbly capable car instead of a city car.

Very nice, a friend at work has one. The lights are very sharp and distinct on the motorway.
