My "new" forfour.
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:55:54 PM »

So i've got myself a forfour.

2006 1.1 Passion manual, with a sprinkling of BRABUS niceties like steering wheel, gearknob and grille. It also has the basic navigator head unit, sound upgrade, trip computer, multifunction wheel, 5 seats, arm rest. It's done a lot of miles but has a long MOT and didn't cost me a lot.

I've got a list of things i'd like to do with it, but i'm going to do my best and run it as cheaply as possible - forfour bangernomics!

My to do list:
  • Get the nav working or put in a radio 6
  • Replace the alternator belt and check to see why something on that side is a bit whiny.
  • Tidy the wiper arms and check the linkages for wear (arm seems to be twisted too)
  • Replace the passenger door speaker (blown)
  • See what I can do about the matt black arches, stone blasted! And try to polish all the scratches
  • Get some stuff to turn the headlight lenses from yellow to clear again
  • Tidy the wheels (new nuts on order) and ditch the cheapo rear tyres
  • Fix the highlevel brake light bulbs (some are a bit intermittent apparently)
  • Work out if it's running cool - 82c max temp so far, i'd have expected a bit more
(There will be more i'm sure)

I'd forgotten how rubbish the standard forfour headlights are, though my lenses are yellowing - so i've ordered a 3M kit from Amazon, and some sealer for afterwards. Then I got to thinking - has anyone used a headlight restoration kit to sort the rear quarterlights and the clear front roof?

hence £40 well spent on a HID kit ;)

a few people have done the headlamps and the side (i think) but the top is not surface scratching, its like the top laminate layer has eroded and you would need to try and possibly blend it in whith whats left.

HID the only way to make a difference. Those lens are only really for HID bulbs, halogens should have reflector housings. Its the same with other cars where they've used lens designed for HID for a halogen bulb

Have to be careful here as there can and is confusion between which
is the bit that actually is/goes yellow or hazy.
The actual projector lens is 'frosty', not clear.....there is a reason for
that that Evil explained elsewhere....it aids light dispersion
by something called 'the fresnel' effect.
The acrylic headlight cover is the bit that goes yellow and crazes etc.
It is very rare for it to be the outer layer....but have a bash using the
cleaner....I tried the toothpaste trick and it did nothing.
What i then found was the yellowing etc is actually on the inside surface.
So...it'll be front of car off....headlights out....bulbs out....clips off...then
heat them in gently in warm oven to soften the sealant...and then pry
them apart to get to the inside of the clear acrylic cover.
Then after it's all done, put it all back together in the reverse order.

Not sure i'm going to go to those lengths just yet. Certainly the external surface feels less than smooth, so i'll see how this kit helps. If it needs the full strip & fix, it might have to wait  ::)
