Smart forfour brabus - General Buying Advice and economy
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:17:18 PM »

Hello All,
Currently looking at buying a brabus and was just after some general advice. The main things I was wondering about are any buying advice/any problems and mostly economy/mpg. Most sites are quoting 41 mpg which seems optimistic! After looking round on the forum it seems more like 30 or is this just bad experiences? Im coming from a celica 190 so as long as its an improvement from that I'll be happy as I do about 15k miles a year! You have to rev the b@$#$@#@ of them to get the power out!
Cheers!

Hi, welcome to forfour forum.
My other car is a celica 190 gt and your correct you do have to rev them to get the best out of it, the Brabus on the other hand you don't, the turbo comes in at around 3k and it pulls really well.mpg wise I'm averaging around 36 mpg my normal journey is only around 14mls and on A roads, but you can get it lower if always in the turbo.
I was thinking of selling mine but don't know what to get! I'm not too far away from you I'm in derby if you wanted to have a look.
Hope this helps

I get 24mpg around town - 230miles per £55 tank.

But on a run I've had nearly 50mpg.

If you want to enjoy it then you will get poor mpg

I average low 40's mpg wise, but do a 55 mile round trip to work involving lots of steady 30 / 40 / 60 limits in traffic. Town driving will see closer to 30, and "spirited" driving in the 20's

Thanks for all the responses! I'm keeping my eyes out but got two cars at the min and one needs to go first at least!
To be fair it doesn't sound too bad on mpg, the only reason I ask is because I do a lot for work. Do you think in general with mixed driving it's better than the celica in terms of mpg and running costs and in terms of handling/ performance etc? I would be interested in having a look! The only thing that annoys me about the celica is the flat spots in the engine where as I can imagine the brabus having power throughout the rev range and better overtaking

BRAB will be a much faster car :) and you don't need to keep the revs up to be in that VVTI rev band.

reliability wise the BRAB is excellent.

you may find the suspension too crashy for long daily commutes.

Unless or until he treats himself to some Bilstein BK14's...right.
Oh, and gets decent circular wheels rather than soft flatspotted Monoblock VI's

I would say for mixed driving the Brab would be more economical than the celica ( just been from home to bake well today and averaged 47 mpg) admittedly traffic was slow as usual. >:( . Handing wise the celica feels better probably because you sit lower but the Brab is good, the std ride on the Brab is very harsh (worse than the Celica) I have fitted the Bilsteins to mine and up rated the bushes which has improved it a bit. As for overtaking the Brab is very good just like any turbo car (I had a gt4 before) it surprises many other performance cars ::)  the turbo can be addictive.

If I could add... the Brab engine has an excellent torque spread and if you make use of this rather than revving the engine then you can optimise the mpg, which in my opinion for the type of car it is isn't bad at all.  ;)

Mid 30s is realistic for commuting, and less when you enjoy it.

I had mine for a year and did 20k miles in it in that time.

The only reason I sold was because it was a bit small for a growing family and I was offered an unbelievable deal on a slightly bigger hot hatch from my boss when he emigrated.

Brabus probably uses more fuel because people enjoy playing with it more. If you drive like regular F4 drivers you most likely get 50MPG ;)
