Title: NEW FORFOUR
Post by: Lawton1987 on October 06, 2010, 08:34:55 PM
Hi everyone, found this article on the net about a new Smart ForFour (http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2010/1010_new_smart_forfour_platform/index.html).  Thought people might want to have a read and a look at the artist impression.

That is horrible, hopefully it will die on its a*s or perhaps only get sold in USA.
No tridion means it's not a smart.

The point of the new 451 chassis was that it could be extended for the new forfour.

The article states its based on the new Micra platform (so reliable) and that it is destined only for the US to fill the void til 2014 when the "official" forfour replacement is due.

I know I'm not blind...but nowhere in the article quoted can I see the date 2014, let alone any mention of  "the 'official' forfour replacement in 2014 ".
What I can quite plainly see is ....
"Smart says its new model will be built in a Nissan plant in the U.S. It's likely to be built in Europe for those markets, as well."

And further reading thru the article I see it mentions a 1.5 turbodiesel.....what's the odds it'll be a Nissan lump and not the MB one we
know and have in 'our' generation forfours.  Oh and CVT as well !   I guess it may not give the odd problems the currrent semi-auto has,
though I've heard some unpleasant words about Ford's and Honda's CVT transmissions. So the jury is out on that one......
And I have to agree with Evil....without a Tridion it's not a Smart...though I do quite like the look of it.

As for Evil's little picture line-up...(Smarts with Tridion's)..I would prefer the top picture...the lower 2 look far to much like a ForTwo, and
it's the difference in looks that makes the forfour what it is. You might as well say the others are photos of the new ForTwoPlus !
(Urghh...where's the bucket)

Yeah by far the first of Evil's pictures has the more eye-candy for me as well. I've been reading latelly about a lot of Smart concept cars. That's a good thing but still if the date is accurate, 2014 is pretty far away for Smart to wait and pretty sure will loose some market share. IMHO :)

I've heard a lot of criticism over the years on car design. In the sixties I heard older work colleagues moan about the mk11 cortina compared to the mk1. The Sierra came out and earned the jelly mould nickname, but sold in shedloads. The flowing crisscross lines of the first Focus have been replaced by the bland model that also sells like hotcakes. It takes time for a new design to grow on people and be appreciated.
We've got a similar thing now to the badge engineering of the sixties and seventies, it's platform sharing to save on development costs. We're quite happy to share out Forfour platform with the Colt, but few of us would buy a Colt and be enthusiastic about it.
I know we get on with the Softouch gearbox, but would we really like to see it carried on to a new model as it is now. If the new Forfour turbodiesel has a nissan engine who knows it may actually be better than what we have now.
Anyway when or if the new model actually comes into fruition some of us will love it and some will turn away. Time marches on and when I occasionally see some of the cars I've bought new they look such dated crap now. I bought a Hillman Imp, Fiat Uno, Mk 111 Escort, Citroen BX, Corsa A etc.
I prefer the top picture myself too. A freshening up of the design without departing too much from it's original concept. We will have to wait and see what we're offered with the new one in the flesh and not as an artist's impression.

This is what the new Forfour is likely to share the platform with http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/Search-Results/First-drives/Nissan-MarchMicra-2010-CAR-review/
Looks a lot better than the Colt to me.
