a thought that crossed my mind is how to retain a similar braking capability
what with the weight of the batteries but no servo assistance.

EV dont have a conventional brake set up like ICE cars. there brakes do indeed use a vacuum. i see I-Paces on a regular basis in the workshop and only 2 weeks ago we had a 2015 Tesla Model S traded in and 2 weeks before that we had a 2020 Corsa-e traded in and they are now both up for sale, all 3 cars have power brakes but both dont have conventional brake servos. they have electric brake servos, were a motor is used to create a vacuum, so you can have power brakes.

you can buy a kit to convert you non-power brake set up to power brakes but you dont fit a conventional brake booster, but you fit an electric booster. i saw it on wheeler dealers recently, not on the TV but on there Facebook/You Tube page, where they fit power brakes to an old US pickup.

An EV slows through 2 ways

Regen braking (where the motor is electrically made harder to turn and feeds electricity into the battery like a Dynamo)

Normal Friction brakes

At the moment you need both sets

The slower you go with regen braking the less braking you get
The slower you go with friction brakes the more braking you get

Regen can be varied. My Zoe has a set level of regen, my pug has 2 modes

The most intense mode is called 1 pedal driving where throttle position is directly related to speed where 0 throttle is 0 speed (more like skalextric) and there is no coasting with your foot off the throttle

The lighter mode is like engine braking

in China,the Hong Huang Mini, with a top speed of 62mph. Proper car, made by SAIC.
Alternatively Alibaba have a 5KW complete rear axle assembly with motor, diff,brakes for 551USD if you want to build your own conversion.

I don’t like the 1 pedal braking

Car reviewers I've read all seem to go mad for this, but none have ever mentioned the downside of no coasting.  Am I correct in thinking then that if one were to lift completely off the pedal the car would do an emergency stop, and otherwise one would keep contact with the pedal at all times?  If so, I'm with you, I wouldn't like it either.  I'd hate even a petrol car which did that.  I'm guessing nobody makes a car on which that is the only mode available?

Not an emergency stop no but slows as if you were applying the brake

Coasting in gear slows the car depending on what gear you are in so engine braking can be harsh or non existent. Same with accelerating, at the same speed, depending on what gear you are in, you’ll accelerate at different rates for the same throttle input  - if you think about it, it’s way more complex

Coasting out of gear is a big no no anyway

In an EV, speed is almost directly proportional to throttle position so it’s v easy to control speed through muscle memory

It’s just different like 2 pedal driving is

Right, I see.  I was thinking that where, going from say a 60-limit to a 40-limit, one would normally lift off the accelerator a short while before and let the car ease down to the lower speed, if 1-pedal mode was selected the result would be way too abrupt.  And I can usually coast home from just over half-a-mile away by coming off the pedal at the top of the hill, then there's a flat bit to knock off the speed before the hill gets steeper down to where I live.

Incidentally, is this the version of 240 estate in which you were interested?  Looks pretty good.

I love those old volvos.

A family friend had a very similar one (not a torslander) way back when....

I remember feeling very safe as a passenger. They were built like tanks in those days.
