Interesting that in this weeks episode of BBC 'Bang Goes The Theory' (air pollution) one item was a comparison of diesel v petrol cars and their relative emissions. Even with a particulate filter the diesel car's exhaust was quite a bit 'dirtier'!   :o

Diesel the clues in the name... fuel oil or diesel oil. It's less refined than petrol, just look at a diesel engined car pulling away in a high gear the amount of soot that's chucked out.

Diesel is only used in locomotive engines because the 2 stroke engine is more efficient and can work at lower revs for consistency. Not for the environment.

The trouble is that this decade all we are worried about is CO2 (carbon dioxide) pollution......last decade is was CO1 (carbon monoxide) and as long as thats ok, you can spew out alien "acid for blood" out the back.....until they start to tax that ;)

..... Its the same 5 speed manual gearbox in the forfour, it has a few extra gizmos
plus an overdrive giving it 6 gears.

Have to correct you there unknown....
the 6 speed AMT uses different ratios to the 5 speed manual.
On the AMT, 1st is different, and there is a large step up to 2nd.
2nd, 3rd , and 4th are roughly the same ratios as the manual,
but 5th is different. And finally the 6th gear is not an overdrive
as it is as evenly spaced from 5th as the other 4 gears are.
80mph is around a leisurely 2300 rpm in 6th !

Mine still pulls quite strongly from that speed, albeit it has a remap.  :P

Something I read many years ago stated the AMT had an overdrive on 5th and this was a Getrag publication on the 5 speed manual & 6 speed auto. Also it said the two gearboxes were identical, the robotic side of the AMT box adjusted the shift pattern to be more economical.

But remember you have a diesel, I had a petrol so the ratios would be different and potentially a different set of cogs too.

Apologies unknown...in my eagerness to post I clean forgot
that there are indeed differences between the petrol and diesel. (I need to slow down a bit..LOL)

So to reitterate, the gearbox on the petrol powered cars...both manual and AMT
share the same basic gearbox, but the AMT has an overdrive 6th gear.

The gearboxes in the diesel's are different though !
Not only does the AMT have a 6th gear, it also has a different first gear ratio to the manual !
The gap between 1st and 2nd is quite pronounced, and can make for an uneasy and slightly
uncomfortable ride in very slow moving traffic as it shifts between the 2 gears.

Would it be possible to utilise the 6 gear AMT gearbox in a manual car with a clutch. Answer I expect is yes but is probably difficult and not straight forward

The manual uses a gear lever that by the use of cables moves a selector that is
positioned into the top of the gearbox, and..that is set up and manufactured to
select only 5 forward gears.
The AMT changes gearbox is operated electronically, and the gears are selected
via actuators inside the gearbox itself.

So it would appear that it would not be possible to change/swop the gearboxes.
However....that's not to say it is impossible.........  ::)

Like Mr G said, it's not impossible but would require not only the new AMT 'box and clutch but the selector unit, gearbox ECU and if that wasn't bad enough you would have to get the car to recognise the new 'box - could require programming via STAR.

What I ment was to make it from a 5 speed manual to a six speed manual for better economy. Would need to compare the rpms at particular speeds to see if after all the work if it would be worth it too. Will note what speed I'm doing in 5th @2500rpm and report back

Mine is doing 90kph (indicated) @2500rpm. I don't think you can make the AMT into a manual, but maybe you could swap the 5th gear cog for the 6th gear one.

Does anybody know the gear ratios of the 5speed manual boxes on Mistubishi Lancer X with 4A91 (which is the 1.5 petrol forfour engine) and 4A92  engines?(a stroked derivative, with 1600cc, but should have a very similar engine block and should take a similar gearbox)

My manual cdi does an indicated 80 @ 2750rpm, so the AMT like G's car is more efficient at higher speed.
