Possible suspension change due to knocking
« on: September 13, 2017, 12:21:06 PM »

I thought I was hearing things but there is definitely a knocking coming from , what sounds  like the suspension. Very evident when driving over speed humps. The car had it's A service last month and moisture was noticed around the shocks. I'm thinking just to put a new set all round on but some of these prices are ridiculous. Cheapest I have found is BC for £750

Maybe new springs from Colt CZC would solve suspension issue?

Check if those plastics around wheels stay in place and plastic bolts are in.

Funny or not I had knocking and bumping on rear right wheel. Noise increased with speed...
What happened? Loosened bolts. When I checked: 1 missing, 2 already very loose and last loose. I could lost that wheel and had accident. Ordered 16 new steel nuts and thightened them heavily. Done trip about 2300 miles 2 weeks ago. Still very tight.
Since that happened I understood to check wheels, brakes and take look on suspension every week or two...

Please do not over-torque wheel nuts, it leads to stretching the bolts and drastically increases the risk of shearing. Tightening torque: 120 Nm

@9582djk you need to first identify the source of the sound. If it only does it over two wheel bumps and not on potholes taken with just one wheel, it could be indicative of anti roll bar bushings or anti roll bar drop links, so swapping shocks would not help.

Yeah, I agree that it was perished bushes somewhere causing this though leaking shocks is going to be something that needs addressing for a MOT I would have thought.

120Nm? Hm. I probably did it right, hard to measure but simple to do math.

120Nm=rF
My cross nut wrench is about 60 cm wide, so r=30cm=0.3m
120Nm=0.3mF /m
120N=0.3F /0.3
400N=F
1 N = 0.102 kg × 9.80665 m/s2
400 x .102kg x 9.80665 m/s2= F

F=40.8kg x 9.80665 m/s2

I think I gave it more than about 40kgs but not much. Just nice push down with my hands! Yeah, should buy torque wrench which I use everyday at work!

If you have weeping around the rear shocks then they need replacing.
And it is 'common' for the rear shock to go on the Brabus....only the Brabus.

BC's aren't bad, but in preference I would go for Bilstien B14's on a standard
Brabus setup. They are ride height adjustable.

BC's 'selling' point is the adjustable 'pillow ball' top mounts, but if one
wants to be technical, then Fast Eddy would be only to willing to tell
you which is the better made/constructed of those 2 makes.

I have BC's on my Brab and KW's on my CDI, and I will be swapping
them over, or maybe even changing from the BC's.

Anyone fitting Bilsteins at this stage, I would advise replacing the top mount bearings at the same time with new items. (if they haven't been changed previously)

Are these the right ones?

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/coilover-suspension-kits/bilstein-b14-pss-ride-height-adjustable-kit

If one uses that link then there are none available (from DemonTweeks)
for either the Smart ForFour Brabus, OR...the Mitsubishi Colt CZT !

Rob at S2smarts is; as far as I am aware; Bilstein's approved supplier
for the B14's for the Smart ForFour Brabus, so you would have to contact
him for any details/price.

Yours being a Brabus, colt parts should be a straight fit, but do confirm with the seller anyway.

Normal forfours have a different anti-roll bar configuration, ours link the bar to the shock absorber with a longer stabilizer link, brabus and colts have it linked to the wishbones with a shorter link.

You could also use normal forfour suspension if you want a more supple ride, you'll just have an extra mounting point on the shock absorber that will remain unused as you'll still link the anti-roll bar to the wishbones.
