Buying a Brabus on Saturday
« on: July 27, 2015, 06:38:46 AM »

I hope to buy a Brabus on Saturday for the wife ;). (coughs out-loud)

I'm going to travel 250km to see a really nice Brabus.
I've spoken to the guy, asked if anything is wrong. As to tell me before I come as I will take it for a real drive and check the car is like he states.
He said all is perfect for a 10 year old car with 79,000K on the clock.

I've owned two forfour's over 11 years. The one I have now was 10 years old yesterday.

It's a 2006 silver Brabus with 79k. Everything original.
The belt hasn't been replaced, i will do.
He is a Merc reseller so he does have some great car.
I will check for signs of accidents, flooding, repairs. Also full turning circle and susp. 2 Keys
What else should I check?

How would I check the turbo?

Thank you in advance everyone.
As i've wanted a Brabus since they came out. Due to work, love life and moving around I didn't get one. Now is the time.

The cambelt change is an essential...and at of before 60k miles.
If not done then I'd be careful about giving it a good thrashing
even on a test drive. But....that's up to you.

Turbo should not be a problem.....a possible cracked manifold
might be though. From cold...open bonnet, and remove the
exhaust heat sheild so that you can run your hands/fingers around
exhaust manifold to see if they come out with a black sooty deposit.
Other than that, all you can do is get someone else to start the
engine..again FROM COLD.  Then listen carefully for any exhaust
leaks...don't rev it.
If it does have a leak/is cracked, then PM me and I'll point you
to a company that makes a stronger standardish 'steam pipe'
replacement manifold that costs less than a genuine Smart one.

What else....the rear shocks. They're known to leak.
Other than that...just the usual checks you would make.

Hope ya have found a good one though...and if so...enjoy  ;D

Thanks CrazyG

It's only got 79,000KM. So i will change it after this winter.

Great advice about starting without reving.
This is why I asked. :)

Hopefully welcome to Brabus Forfour ownership.
As Graham says the cambelt is overdue by mileage, but more importantly it is very overdue by age.  I think they say 5 or six year intervals.  They can and do perish.
I would make this first on my list of things to do.
If you need advise on tuning, a few of us have played with these to good effect.  The standard manifold is a poor design and crack as Graham has mentioned so replace it with an uprated one and a remap from T4P and you will have a pocket rocket.
Good luck

Got the Brabus.
Belt was changed two years ago. Manifold was in really good condition.
Car is a LHD Brabus with only 73k KM on the clock.
Drove it home and was really impressed. I love my 1.3 Forfour Passion but this is different.
I do say it feels rather skittish when compared to the 1.3.
It has the upgraded Brabus wheels in perfect condition. (I will be selling them soon as 17" isn't great for Lublin roads)

:) 8.1L/100km on the way home. 200km

Some stuff i need to check on it.
Computer says 120km till refill tank, petrol bar is on 1/8. Normal?
One Air vent cover is broke, small crack on windscreen, Front Brabus bumper needs new clips, Battery on remote. Only one remote so I need a new one.
How to get use to MF steering wheel too.

All in all i'm happy. What 9 year old car doesn't have a few niggles.

I now have my Polish plates. LU 404CN, was the plate given to me from the office.
LU = Lublin, 404 great number as it has 44 in it. CN are my initials.

People have been asking me if it is brand new. :) They are shocked when i tell them its 9 years old.
I even have my 1.3 Passion and they think it is a different car or the latest one. haha
